Defense wins championships, Lads.

That is all.

The first time the Cowboys picked #4 was in 1964. They traded their pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for their wide receiver and additional pick. Cowboys then traded that WR away for additional picks. In the end, Cowboys ended up drafting Mel Renfro, Bob Hayes and Roger Staubach with their first 3 picks. Landry was a genious.

A little food for though on defensive linemen in this draft. Ends and tackles... 3 and 1 techniques... Good quick synopsis.

Keep in mind, mock drafts are usually way off. Especially at this point in the off season. If they do decide to go defense though I would prefer that they trade back. Also I do not want them to take a CB in the 1st round. They need a consistent pass rush more than they need anything else. Even though they do not put much value on 1-tech DT's in the 1st round I think that's where they need to go. Draft a guy that can occupy blockers in the middle freeing up Crawford.

And until they address the DT-1 tech position, nothing will change in Cowboy land concerning their defense. Anyone who has known me the past 3 or 4 years will tell you I have been begging for exactly this. I'm willing to go out on the limp and predict going into next season, that unless the defense is the MAIN FOCUS of the upcoming draft, the Cowboys will not make the playoffs next season.

I still think Austin Johnson is the guy to keep an eye on in the 2nd.

Draft Austin Johnson, sign Mario Williams, and sign Olivier Vernon from Miami. If they do that their DL is set and should have the pass rush it needs. Draft a QB with the 4th pick, sign Lamar Miller and spend the rest of their picks on the defensive side. By doing that they should be very competitive this season.

I want defense addressed in first round as well.

I know you do. Not everyone feels that way though.

As for Mario Williams, you're not the only one that thinks he's a total piece or ****. Pretty much everyone in Houston feels the same way. I'm thinking about a guy though that is a true 4-3 DE and before the Bills switched to a 3-4 was putting up double digit sacks. He's also be cheap.

He's not exactly a leader though. He has a reputation of being a selfish player. As long as he's not out beating women or doing drugs though I can live with him being a selfish player.

Mr. B. Before I continue with my point I need to ask you a question first. Do you think Tony Romo is one of the elite QB's in today's NFL?

Do I think Tony Romo is elite right now? No I don't. Romo to me is the best of the non-elite QB's. I also do not think he has 5 years left in him like Jerry does. I've said here before that realistically (health and contract) Romo has 2 years left. Are you confident he will play at a Super Bowl level and stay healthy for all 16 games over the next 2 years?

I don't believe Romo will play 5 years either. I think I finally understand your position on the draft. I didn't know you felt that way about Romo. Now I know why you want a QB. The point I was going to make was in a totally different direction.

So then I should also assume you don't see the Cowboys in the Super Bowl in the next 2 years?

No I really don't. Not saying that they couldn't, because in the world of parity anything could happen. I just think it will be damn near impossible with Romo's health.

Sounds like where my head was at 2 years ago. Got piled on by some of the poster's at the Hoop. Thought Ware was hugely over rated and I wanted back then, to blow the whole team up, take our lumps and start rebuilding. I also hated many of the other bums and contracts as well. Spencer, Ratliff, etc. Your at that point now.

I don't want to blow the team up though. They have a young dominant OL. I just want them to start looking at the team and preparing for life beyond Romo. I don't care if they don't draft any offensive player (other then QB) as long as they get the guy for the future. The worst thing they could do is wait 2 years until Romo is actually retired before addressing the future QB position.

By doing that, they would be doing exactly what they did when Aikman retired. Loading up for one final run with their old brittle QB only to fail miserably and then spend the next 10 years hoping to luck into another QB.

What is that saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome?

I agree. Keep our nice O-Line and build around it. So lets unload Romo, Witten and Dez right now. Think of all the draft choices we could get for dez right now. Take our lumps this year, Stay at #4 and get your QB, then draft like hell with all our added picks with what we have now with the holes we need to fill.

Return to Dallas Cowboys
