Could Caracter be the next David West?

Post#1 » by Gek » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:20 pm

So in lieu of the CP3 discussions and multiple "Could Caracter be" threads, I thought I'd make one about my comparison. (Feel free to merge with whatever mods).

Caracter and West are the same height and essentially weight (since no one knows Caracter's true weight at this point). Both had similar last year stats in college. I realize that West has a larger wingspan and is a smidge quicker on his feet. His jump shot is a little more proven from deep and he doesn't necessarily have the muscle that Caracter does, but I see Caracter working to that point of quickness if he isn't there already having lost so much weight and worked out so much since the Combine. I see Caracter as a David West ceiling player on a team like New Orleans where he would need to be. He won't have the break out first or second season like West, but has the potential to get there.

Thoughts?

Is Caracter the third power forward? That's what I wonder.

I think this is a better more realistic comparison, West isn't as good a rebounder as his #s suggest. I think with time Caracter can be as good.

I doubt Caracter ever averages more than 7 boards a game unless he works his ass off at it.

Can we wait before Caracter plays an NBA game before we begin the comparisons?

If we go by the Summer League, Michael Beasley would've won ROY instead of Rose. Also, Chalmers would be a better PG than Rose.

Beats talking about Matt Barnes, Chris Paul and Tracy McGrady IMO.

Well if we want to talk potential, I see Ebanks becoming more of a contributor to our team than Caracter. However if they can both turn into Ariza and West, then we would have the best bench in the league, no doubt about it.

Since I like West a lot and feel he is underrated, I would love it if Caracter could be something close to him.

I think West can put it on the floor and get to the basket a lot better than Caracter, at this point, but hopefully he compares at some point.

I expect Caracter to become he next bench warmer. Unless Phil gives him playing time this year, I won't expect much out of him or Ebanks for that matter. They would do wonders if they give it their all in practice. I'm sure Kobe is tired of playing over Sasha's head for all these years.

nope, he wont get any playing time. alot of the reason for why some players develop like david west is because they have game time to grow and make mistakes, and usually are starters of quick off the bench. caracter will be lucky to log 10mpg next season to be honest

Could he become like DWest? Possibly, but I think that would be his ceiling, and honestly, I don't think he'll reach that ceiling.

DWest has a great shot, a pretty reliable shot. I guess we can say that anyone can work on their shot and get it better, but disappointingly, most don't get a lot better. From what I saw, Caracter didn't display decent range during summer league.

If anything, summer league showed me that Caracter likes to operate close to the basket. Given that he's undersized for it, I doubt that he will be as effective once he goes up against true big men in the NBA. I do think he can develop into an effective player. I just don't see him becoming a star (a mediocre star, at that) like DWest.
