It reported that the money gained by Buss will allow him to get over the inheritance tax. This would allow him to pass the Lakers on to his family after he is no longer able to. The team will have (3+Billion)enough money to fund itself (see Yankees/ GB Packers) while the family manages it.

Now my question is with 3 Billion funding the team, does this allow the Lakers to become less frugal when going after free agents?! :o

Depends on whether or not the new CBA includes a hard cap.

Time will settle many questions.

What about Dish Network, AT & T and Virzon.. You can not cut that many systems off. Million of people will get shafted. More answers as they come I hope.

thats not really an issue. think of the new channel like tbs and tnt, channels also run by time warner.

Ah, that was my worry as well since I have AT&T U-Verse. Thank god. Good for the Lakers, and good for me.

Oh okay... Wow this new CBA will be interesting. I hear they will be implementing the Franchise player tag function to the new CBA.

Also this deal could over the next few years make the Lakers the NBA's first Billion dollar franchise.

I like spero and love stu but it kind of surprises me how fast I'd jump off their bandwagon if we got somebody like Kevin Harlan.

if you read the link i posted, buss has reportedly had offers over 1bil for the lakers, so they already are a billion dollar franchise.

Stunning what CNBC's Darren Rovell told Mason and Ireland on 710. He said that the most Fox Sports West offered was $75 million per year and that when they heard the Time Warner offer they laughed "out of their chairs." This deal with Time Warner is for $150 million per year. He also went on to say that this deal is $60 million MORE than what the Yankees make with YES Network. He would know since he is based in New York. Amazing! I don't blame Dr. Buss. The current deal pays them $30 million per year from Fox. WOW!

Oh wow that's great for the buss family. i definitely think its crucial they maintain ownership of the lakers, and don't mind paying a bit more for the channels to keep that going.

i wish this happeend before the sasha deal so we would have traded his expiring for a valuable player instead of just desperate cash ;)

The Lakers have 15 nationally televised games that won't be shown on FSN or KCAL this season (ESPN games don't count, and I'm assuming here that this will carry over into this deal). Now, if half of those are home games, that means out of 41 games FSN is showing about 34. That works out to about $882,352.94 per game.

Given that the new network will carry both home and away games, they'll be showing about 67. at $150 million a year, that works out to about $2,238,805.97 per game. So, about 2.5 times what FSN is paying.

I don't know how much money is made off of commercials during games, but add that to Jack in the Box and Carls Jr.'s sponsorships and TW should still turn a profit. And since they're trying to get this network off the ground, I can see their willingness to shell out that kind of money.

Plus, after 15 years, the price probably won't be so high compared to the rest of the league, and they'll still have the Lakers locked up for 5 more.

Whoa, a cable TV deal ? All of my buddies down in Orange County roll with Direct TV. I thought cable was kind of like a third wheel holding on by a string to survive vs. Direct TV, guess not if they can scratch a check like that.

I'd assume that it would be exclusive to cable like the NFL is to Direct TV. Is there going to be an In The Paint show like th Red Zone channel so we can at least see highlights? This doesn't sound good on the surface for us Direct TV folk.

direct tv, dish network, and whatever other providers there are will be able to carry it just like they carry tnt, tbs, and fox sports west.

It's in TW's best interests to get their channel carried by as many providers as possible. More eyes = higher ad revenues.

And they'll need them after this deal.

the article i linked on page 2 talks about the other providers:

Flint reports that in order for TWC to pay that enormous broadcast rights fee, it will have to charge a rate significantly higher than what Fox Sports West currently charges satellite and cable companies to broadcast Lakers games in Los Angeles:

Consumers may feel some pain as a result of the deal. Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) are generally some of the most expensive programming for distributors. Typically, RSNs cost between north of $2.50 per month, per subscriber. Given the high cost of the Lakers, Time Warner Cable will likely be looking for north of $3.50.

You can expect Cox, Charter, Dish and DTV to publicly balk at such a fee hike, but TWC apparently has a plan that it hopes will make them more amenable. From Flint:

Time Warner Cable, which has about 2 million subscribers in Southern California, isn’t looking to stop with the Lakers. In an interview, Melinda Witmer, executive vice president and chief programming officer of Time Warner Cable, said the company would be “looking at all available sports in the marketplace.”

Next on their list could be the Dodgers. The team’s current pact with Fox’s Prime Ticket channel expires in 2013.

In other words, if TWC were to have the Lakers and Dodgers for its new sports channels, it’d essentially have a gun to the head of Cox, Charter, Dish and DTV. Though it is important to note that Fox Sports West has a favorable contractual arrangement with the Dodgers and, from what multiple sources within the team tell me, is more likely to retain those rights.

Good now I can stop paying for league pass. It's hard trying to watch your team & the other teams are usually hating on the Lakers or gloating when they beat us.
