The way Jordan Hill has been playing we'd be crazy to move him. He's actually playing above his contract right now

One of the picks would probably be Houston's...so really it's a wash, because we picked up Lin's salary.

This trade would be the corpse of Steve Nash +1 pick for a player that would:

-immediately give us an elite ball distributor
-be a defensive spearhead
-move Lin to his more natural role, perhaps creating a situation where we can retain him longterm to a Swaggy type contract
-which would in turn create a bench of Swaggy and Lin going forward
-would give us a puncher's chance at attracting more FAs

The real question is would our next available first round pick to trade even matter when it comes to building a team. I think we'll be competing in Buss's 4 year timeline anyway...so will one first rounder even scratch the surface if we've signed a few key FAs in that time? Are we going to sacrifice the future and near future for a middling first round pick?

We're in for a dollar already. If you have a shot to reload, I think you give it a longer look than it's being given ATM.

Just the Houston pick? Then get it done. However, I don't see them moving Rondo that easily.

No I meant the Houston pick and one more.

IMO, the Houston pick is a great consolation and all, but essentially what we did is got Lin for capspace...

So if we did trade for Rondo, it'd be:

Rockets get diddly
Lakers get Rondo + Lin
Boston gets Nash's expiring+2015 Houston 1st+LAL 2019(?) 1st.

If you look at it that way I think it'd be worth it.

Those 2019 firsts give me a heart attack. Unless Mitch is going to protect them top 15.

Going by the same logic, wouldn't the Rockets be able to offer more to Boston for Rondo?

You would be officially off the tank for a top 5 pick bandwagon then?

If this type of trade goes down, we would definitely lose the top 5 pick (unless Rondo and Kobe play terribly together, then probably Rondo leaves and we might be worse off). If that happens it could set the franchise back another 2-3 years.

Seems safer to wait until free agency for Rondo and try to keep all of our assets (that top 5 pick mainly). Even if we lose the top 5 pick, that 20s pick from Houston could potentially be a nice roleplayer.

Not when Rondo gets to choose his team.

i'm not sure if the two would work out basketball wise theyre both ball dominant players. but at the same time we're not really in the position to be picky tho. if we can get him for a reasonable contract then i'm cool with it.

The only way I see Rondo and Kobe clashing is when Kobe is doing his James Harden impersonation on defense.

Because Rajon doesn't take any breaks on defense, EVER.

I want the pick, but I don't believe we secure it without making the "grown man move" to do so. But all indications are we aren't looking to go into fire-sale mode, thus I'm looking at how we might reload to compete in the next 2-3 years.

I think getting a defensive player that is an elite creator is a step (with all the added benefits from my previous posts).

I've been thinking about 8 man rotations...to me that means a great team needs:

2 PGs
3 Wings
3 Bigs

Right now we have:

PG: 1. Lin. He's okay but could be a truly special backup. An X-factor.
Wings: Kobe and Nick Young. We need a better defender to complement them.
Bigs: Hill and Davis: problem is their skill sets are a little too similar. So to me, unless we resign Davis for cheap, he's gone. Or we re-sign him as a cheaper option than Hill.

So next year we'd look at:

PG: 2. Rondo, Lin.
Wings: Kobe, Nick, +3D somewhere
Bigs: Hill, Randle, +Defensive Anchor

Essentially this year we have 4 of 8 players currently playing that we'd need, plus Randle in the bank. IMO, we've got to make 3 upgrades, one in each section.

Upgrading PG, while retaining Lin and all other assets but Nash, the Rocket pick, and the next tradable 1st rounder is within reason and perhaps a start. I could see us going after Gasol and then that 3D wing. From there we'd need length and a glue-guy...basically Wes Johnson on steroids.

But offensively we're a solid team right now. Upgrading to simplify Lin, Hill, and Kobe's roles would be huge.

His starting job? This isn't about Lin it's about the team. I'm not even convinced he'd be mad if we acquired Rondo, I think this would free him up to not be Kobe's #2.

Not really. Rajon is the new Kobe, and by that, I mean he still gets credit for being a good defender, even though he stopped playing that calibre of defense years ago. He's still good at playing the passing lanes, but in terms of keeping his man in front of him, Rondo is probably 4th on the team, maybe 5th.

Is that effort or has he lost athleticism?

Pau Gasol was awful and injured on Mem and once he was traded he became "the most talented big man in the league" to a lot of people.

But if Rondo's over the hill then: pass.
