Jordan Clarkson becomes first Laker to win rookie of the month

Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson has been named Kia NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in March, it was announced today, becoming the first ever Laker to be honored with the award (first presented in 1981-82).

In 16 games in March, Clarkson averaged a team-leading 15.8 points on 45.2% shooting, in addition to 5.2 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. The 46th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft (acquired from Washington) also scored the winning points in overtime in the final second of two games with a layup March 30 at Philadelphia, and the clinching free throws in a tied game March 25 at Minnesota.

In the March 30 contest, Clarkson joined Stephen Curry, John Wall, and Russell Westbrook as the only players in the NBA this season to record a game of at least 26 points, 11 assists, six rebounds, and three steals. On the road in Oklahoma City March 24, Clarkson set career-highs with 30 points and three blocks, becoming the first Laker rookie since Eddie Jones (2/4/95) to score 30 points in a game.

Since being named a starter 31 games ago, the 22-year-old is averaging a team-leading 15.0 points per game to go with 4.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 0.87 steals.

Not sure anymore, I didn't expect the kind of vision Clarkson has developed lately. Didn't see that coming on at all, I expected him to be a scorer, undersized SG but he's showing great lead guard instincts off the pick and rolls and drive and dish plays.

Well Bynum was outside of his injuries. The problem is we rarely have high picks so it gets infinitely harder to get a good player or hit a home run in the second round.

I began watching basketball after Anthony Davis was drafted ; I'm seventeen.

Just shows high lottery picks are sometimes over rated. Marcus Smart last night. 2 points and zero assist.

On the season he's averaging 7.6 points on 35.6% shooting. Celtics fans like his defense, but you don't need a lottery pick to find a good defender who is useless on offense. Clarkson is already the better player.

glad he got this. been playing well and actually has impact in the game and making his teammates better. great confidence booster for him. hope he continues and stays with the team for a long time with randle ala fisher/kobe.

Parker might have a faster first step, but everything else in terms of athleticism JC has him beat IMO.

Where the Scott haters at ? Thought Byron didn't help develop anyone ? He's done a damn fine job of guiding JC through the season. The rest of this is on JC to take by the horns. I truthfully think we should move JC to the 2 next season while moving Kobe to the 3, which is something I've been saying we should've done almost 4 years ago...maybe he wouldn't have gotten burned out by chasing all those 2's.

Doing those two moves will allow the team to gamble on Rondo, seeing as his offensive limits wouldn't show too much being surrounded by Kobe and Jordan. Defensively we would be a ton better, JC doesn't even realize how good of a defender he could be if he went for it.

Also JC being a 2nd rounder means he's going to come into his payday extension a lot quicker. He has a team option for next season which will obviously be picked up this summer.

Also better rebounder,defender, better at getting to the basket ( Parker at this point in his career is done as elite penetrating guard) and better freethrow shooter. Don't even know why Parker is even mentioned in this convo....he's next to being cooked.

Really starting to love this guy. All these lame realgm haters hoping we stay stuck. Their jealousy is clouding their judgment when it comes to us. With Clarkson and a good draft pick this year along with Randle coming back our future is looking pretty good to me.
