Maybe. Or maybe he wasn't getting any other offers from teams other then the vet min or 2-3 million.

This contract besides besides being trade friendly also has the potential to pay huge dividends if he plays well. Both the team and player gets something out of it.

I think it was a smart move for both sides

If Yi kneels during the USA anthem, his jersey sales would hit #1 easily. Imagine all the new black fans he'll get in addition to the Chinese fans who'll want another Lakers jersey.

I think this is a good deal for the Lakers. Lakers are basically paying Yi based on the number of games he'll play. If he gets injured or sucks, Lakers could waive him and not have to pay him. Mozgov is going to get $16million next year even if he only plays 1 game for the Lakers. If Yi plays in all 82 games, Yi will get $8million. $8 mil for an NBA player these days is like minimum wage.

Cringed at all those jumpers he's practising with a foot on the 3 point line.

True, but if the defense respects his jumper it opens it up for others. If they dont it gives him all the time in the world to shoot his slow jumper.

He made those same 3's against the NBA All-stars in the Olympics. I would think he can do the same against NBA backups.

I doubt he'll be taking a ton of threes. He'll probably be getting mostly pick and pop opportunities Taking pressure off guys like JC and Russ. With the occasional three here and there.

Plus, how many big men have super quick releases?... Also, how quickly do you think the centers that are going to be guarding him are going to be able to switch and recover? Lol

If our young guys play well he should be getting some open shots. From what I see his stroke looks good... He'll be fine out there.

if you look clearly at his body language, he just coasting. We will see him in full speed in NBA games. That's when we can start to properly judge him.

Im pretty optimistic about the guy. A player like Whiteside got his ish together after his first stint in the NBA why can't Yi? Im not saying he's going to come out and go crazy like Whiteside did but I think in 2016 more teams are equipped to use his better skills and he's probably a better player than he was then.

I'm honestly more stunned that a thread about Yi **** Jianlian has 9 pages than i am about the Lakers signing Yi **** Jianlian.

Probably because it's mostly filled with dudes complaining about the signing.

See: Mozgov thread for further details.

Interesting stuff about Yi, Zubac, Randle etc. YI could turn out to be a great signing — perhaps under the radar stealth offseason brilliance.

Apparently, he's a 250 pound beast these days, was top 10 in the Olympics in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals, shot well over 40% from three.

Can he set a tough screen? If so, Moz might have to fight to get to start. I'm excited about the potential this roster has.

If Yi starts at the 4 but we are winning will people still complain that he shouldn't start over Randle and Nance?

Personally i think the players on the floor that produce the best product should start regardless of age or draft status. I know that's not the common feeling for a team that's not good enough to win it all and needs their young core to develop. I would rather see nance and randle loose minutes and we be in the 30-40 window than have them get 30+ mins and we be in the 15-30 win range. Also Yi's trade value would be much higher if he can compete in starting lineups.

I dont think Yi is starting at the 4 at all let alone playing there. Randle, Nance and factor in that Deng at this point is probably most effective at the 4. There is a logjam there. Zubac mostly will be on the D Fenders this year so the backup 5 min will go to Yi and Black

Luke has said he won't decide on starting lineup until it's time, that whoever plays the best at that time will start.

This should not be a surprise. This is on par with the few other Asian NBA players. Jeremy Lin gets 10+ pages on the Charlotte Hornets realgm forum as well as the Lakers forum a couple years ago.
