MIN - HOU
MIN GETS: Kevin Martin and Chase Budinger
HOU GETS: Michael Beasley, Anthony Randolph, and Martell Webster (+ MEM and/or Utah 1st if necessary)
Proof it works financially: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7w4ngnj
Why for Houston: Massive salary dump. All three players that they get back expire after this year (Beasley and Randolph are RFAs and Webster is guaranteed). Additionally, Morey has shown in the past that he's willing to take on talented but underachieving projects to try to get the most out of thenm (describes Beasley and Randolph), and both Martin and Budinger appear to be in McHale's doghouse.
Why for Minnesota: Minnesota eats a bunch of salary to become a legit playoff team. Let's face it, Minnesota's wing rotation to this point has been terrible. Luke Ridnour, an average Point Guard, has been Minny's starting SG for a big portion of the year. Martin and Budinger are two guys that not only are big upgrades, but are also Adelman favorites who know his offense and will actually get playing time. This move also opens up a ton of playing time at the 3 that Adelman will hopefully use to get Derrick Williams into the rotation.

Re: MIN - HOU
That would push Minny into the playoffs in my mind.
I hate it for Houston though. They have too many mediocre tweener forwards on that team already. Not only is Martin worth more than a salary dump, but they're throwing in Budinger too?

My thought is that if McHale isn't going to play them, they might as well get something for them.
Budinger has only played in 27 of Houston's 31 games, didn't play at all last night, and has apparently lost his spot in the rotation to Chandler Parstons, and Martin has been upset with his role and minutes lately, only played 9 minutes in a game a few days ago, and didn't play in the 4th at all last night.
Also, with his salary, age, and decline in production (due to rule changes), I'm not sure that Martin is worth more than a salary dump.

Yeah, well, you're not going to get Martin for a salary dump. No chance.
McHale's philosophy is to go with the hot hand, so if Martin -- or any other starter for that matter -- is struggling, McHale will go with somebody else.
Budinger didn't play in a few games early on because he wasn't assertive enough for McHale's liking and McHale prefers a 9 man to a 10 man rotation to begin with.
Budinger has picked up his game since and was a key contributor in a number of games for us. He didn't play last night because McHale thought Parsons, Lee and Patterson would match up better with Beasley.
For the same reason Budinger played limited minutes against the Thunder (Durant) and Grizzlies (Gay).
I think Budinger will get traded in some kind of package, but he sure isn't some throw-in.
Also, you bring up that Martin's salary (which is totally disagree with), yet ignore Budinger's dirt cheap contract.

Re: MIN - HOU
If we're adding Buddinger in, then we should definitely add Utah and Memphis's 1sts.
I think that makes it more palatable for Houston, as it's a salary dump for a couple picks and a couple young players on a 2 month trial.

im not sure why Buddinger is just thrown in as well. hes clearly better than Webster and while Randolph has potential (i guess somehow, thats the only reason i can think of as to why hes valuable), i dont see how hes any better either.

I think a simple Buddinger to Minnesota deal makes sense without a Martin deal. Martin is expensive (a Kahn speaking point no), is defensively challenged, and is looking considerably less efficient now, whether it is the rule changes or just the new offense.
Meanwhile, Buddinger is dirt cheap, a good outside shooter, a better-than-Martin-defender, and is now behind Parsons in Houston. Plus it doubles Minnesota's dunk participants. That alone is worth a pick, right?

I'd be ok with a pick for Buddinger.HartfordWhalers wrote:Narf wrote:If we're adding Buddinger in, then we should definitely add Utah and Memphis's 1sts.

But that doesn't really solve our problem at SG o_O
