IT'S SO SIMPLE! Nets and Nuggets

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Fri Oct 22, 2010 12:34 am

Based on the recent article from a Nets beat writer, the Nets and Nuggets are cutting out the middlemen, and coming to a simple 2-team deal. The latest development, removing Devin from the table, is one that I feel benefits all parties: the Nets, Nuggets and even Anthony.

While I would prefer to involve Outlaw after Dec. 15th, the Nuggets might pull the trigger on a deal with someone else before the season starts, UNLESS we strike now. I have alot of faith in Derrick Favors reaching his massive potential, but if we can deal for Melo without dealing Lopez OR Harris, we've just got to do it. The Nuggets are trying to shed as much cap as possible, so I've devised a deal that takes the most advantage of this requirement. Here's the deal:

Melo/JR/Birdman for Troy/D-Fav/Kris/T-Will/Ross/James, as well as NJN's '11 1st and GSW's '12 1st

The Nuggets only have 12 players currently under contract, so this deal works from that angle. DEN saves $5mil in '10 cap, and gets multiple athletic, high-upside prospects. While Williams, James and Favors aren't Iguodala, Wallace or Noah yet, having all three on rookie-scale contracts fills all 3 defensive holes Denver is trying to fill while trading their franchise player.
Billups, Williams, Harrington, Murphy, Nene
Lawson, Afflalo, James, Humphries, Favors

NJN assembles a Big Three (of sorts), with quality role players and room to grow. The Nets get favorite sons from both NJ (Smith) and Brooklyn (Melo), to help "bridge" the move to the Empire State.
Harris, Smith, Anthony, Andersen, Lopez
Farmar, Morrow, Outlaw, Smith, Petro

I actually think New Jersey is overpaying here.

I think that this is the best variation that I have seen so far...I like it from both sides, but maybe New Jersey holds onto the picks?

Denver is about $12.4 mil into the luxury tax. Saving only $5 mil is not going to do it.

You will probably have to send Humphries and $3 mil to some team under the cap or with a TPE first in a completely seperate deal so that you can have $3 mil to add into the Melo deal.

And LOL at the comment that NJ gives up too much in this deal. They give up Terrance Williams, two mid first round picks and two unproven rookies for a top 5 scorer in this league who is coming around on the defensive end too. Smith, Murphy, Humphries are all expiring fillers.

Edit: Indiana has a $3,458,413 TPE from Troy Murphy and they are looking for a PF that will not affect their cap next year. They also don't rake in the bucks attendance wise, so I think they are a perfect partner for Kris Humphries +$3 mil cash that way NJ clears room and Indy only pays $200K for Humphries.

ecuhus1981, can you shed a bit more light on your cap situation? Here is what I see on google docs:

$11,968,253 Murphy
$8,981,000 Harris
$7,000,000 Outlaw
$4,133,280 Favors
$4,000,000 Morrow
$3,750,000 Farmar
$3,250,000 Petro
$3,200,000 Humphries
$2,413,320 Lopez
$2,214,480 Williams
$1,156,320 James
$1,146,337 Ross
$100,000 May (waived)
$500,000 Dooling (waived)

TOTAl: $53,812,990

But then I see several others that I am not sure what the situation is:
$854,389 Graham
$854,389 Smith
$473,604 Zoubek ($50K guaranteed)
$473,604 Uzoh ($35K guaranteed)

Where any of these waived today?

The way I see it, if Smith and Graham are waived along with one of Zoubek/Uzoh and you do the Humphries + $3 mil to Indiana, you will have just enough room to absorb JR Smith with cap room first and then use the 125% rule with Murhphy + Favors + Williams + James for Melo, Balkman and Anderson. Doing it this way allows Ross not to be added and allows Denver to add Balkman.

So the net trade is (two seperate for the $3 mil x 2):

Humprhies + $3 mil from NJ to Indiana
Melo, Anderson, JR Smith, Balkman to New Jersey
Murphy, Favors, Williams, James, NJ 2011 pick, GSW 2012 pick and $3 mil cash from NJ to Denver

Denver ends up saving $10,643,061 in that version and gets some good quality pieces.

Getting Denver all the way under the cap isn't the drop dead goal, but I like your ideas, JES12.

An absolute overpay for two reasons:

1. The going rate/discussed offers have been either Harris, Favors, 2 #1's or Murphy, Humphries, Favors, 2 #1's. We are overpaying by T.Williams and D.James who are not throw ins.

2. Why are we outbidding ourselves?
Who can trump (that Melo would actually extend with) Harris or Murphy + Favors + 2 #1's?

NJ has one only 1 rival for Melo's services, and if Denver is going to trade Melo, they are going to trade Melo. It's not as though upping the offer is going to convince them. Either they want to trade him or they don't. If Denver wants to trade Melo (and Melo is willing to extend) it's either going to be to NY or NJ.

NY could do:
Curry
AR or Gallo (I doubt they give up both)
Chandler (may be used to get a #1)
$3m

That offer is not better than NJ's original offer. No need at all to go this high.

ALSO... all this is based on the assumption NJ either feels the need to, or wants to trade for Melo. I think many outsiders would be surprised to find, most of us are torn, and not fans of getting Melo. There is no way Melo + Lopez can compete for a tile anytime soon. Miami, LAL and a few others have the title on lock the next 3 -5 years. NJ needs to think about when Lopez, Favors and T.Will are in their primes (3-5) years and ready to be heir apparents, or at least part of that group of teams.

Most of us agree, getting Melo is not in our best interests when it comes to becoming a contender. Rather, most of the motivation to land Melo is prevent NY from getting him, assuring a star attraction when moving to Brooklyn, and other business related motivations. This would not be thinking about the bigger picture.

I'd do this. I just really like Favors, so a Favors/Twill/Harris or Murphy/Two 1sts is good enough for me. I'm willing to let go of JR and Birdman too.

WTF is goin on here guys?? For those guys that have been goin on about how moving to the rock was gonna help the nets. Well I went to the C's and philly games. Now I may never given us a chance to the C''s game. But some individual performances ( and I mean that in a good way) left me feelin we could be a surprise teamthis year. Then the philly game knocked my socks off.

This group is tight. Sure Morrow shoots to soon in the offence as does outlaw. So..
1.. They shouldn't be on the floor at the same time.
2.. As bipolar as T-Will is. I am still a massive fan. Some of those passes were ther just big guys cuttin instead of flashin F-ed up his passes
3.. Sexual should not and can not be traded under any circumstances. The fact that he trys to throw down a left handed alley oop off balance and coping some mean defensive pressure while almost head butting the back board!.. Means he is a player.

4.. No to Melo. The ball needs to be in brooks hands first then kick it out to the wings.
Melo will just pull and shoot.

Remember guy's I was the one who said that the trade for VC was just fool god's. What happened in Orlando?
