For Detroit, deal to ship out Gordon saves them nearly $15 million on the final two years of his contract. Maggette has an expiring deal. The deal sends Detroit's 2013 first-round pick to Charlotte with lottery protection, sources tell Y!

Like this a lot for both sides.

It isn't groundbreaking, but it gets a CBA basketball geek such as myself all hot and bothered.

wow.

Detroit fans are going to be pissed.

Still 15m for a future lottery protected pick is a steep price.

I'm leaning towards neither won. Poll added.

I bet they arent. I bet they see this as a steal and rightfully so. Amnesty Charlie and next year they are a huge player with some bigtime FAs available.

How is this bad for the Bobcats?
They're not ready/good enough to make a major FA acquisition next year so why not put it off until 2014 and pick up another 1st in the process?
BG will provide much needed scoring.

Good trade for the Pistons too.

I like it for the Bobcats. They needed shooting badly, and Gordon gives them that. And they get a pick to boot. Not bad.

In terms of how it isn't good for the Bobcats, its just really expensive. Thats it.

If the protection is 14/14/14 like that Houston pick owed to NJ, then its a super expensive distant mid 1st for 15 million. If the protection declines quick, maybe its better but I think your still looking at spending 15 million for a '14 mid 1st, which is still a not great value.

I would guess that it is the pick Portland owes Charlotte as part of the Gerald Wallace trade. Top 12 protected until 2015 then unprotected. Charlotte owes their own protected pick to Chicago

Its bad in real $$$ which is a real thing for them. In a desperate attempt to sell season tickets for 12-13 they are giving away 13-14 for free. Im shocked they would take on BG jsut for a mid-1st. Guess I need to get my Haywood offer ready for them....

It is Detroit owing the pick, not Charlotte.

Kemba and Ben Gordon in the same backcourt is going to be painful to watch. I'm liking the 1st round pick though. :)

Charlotte was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy under the salary cap in 2013-2014. Like hoopshype number for that year, before this trade, is 8.6 mil. Obviously that doesn't include Biyombo, Kemba, Henderson and rookie contracts, but still, they're probably nowhere near the salary floor even after this deal. This is money they had to spend.

I'm a draft pick guy, but I hate it for Detroit. Trading a future 1st to dump a contract is a classic bad franchise move. Also capspace doesn't help Detroit, the only thing they can sign is future Gordon/CV moves.

capspace always helps u--you can still acquire premium talent through trades even if u cant lure FAs to Detroit.

I doubt that Pistons pick becomes anything but its a good risk for the Cats. The difference between Gordon and Maggette for the Bobcats isn't really much.

For the Pistons its a good idea but i'm afraid its going to push them to try to make a playoff push too early instead of a building a solid foundation.
