Damn Mavs stole this I don't mind having Odom but the Mavs should of had to pay more to get rid of a contract they did not want.

Cuban parties tonight with a huge tpe for after their moves are complete. Donnie Nelson just earned his bonus for next season.

yep we got really lucky that there was a team who actually wanted the player and not just the contract. If Odom is happy and plays like he has tho the Clippers got a huge steal too.

LOL.

Many of the realgm posters said we would have to give up #17 and/or Roddy to "dump" Odom. We have always said we would trade $3 mil to some team so that a team can pocket $600K to do the waiving.

This is even better as not only do we not pay, but we get some cash.

You'll have to renounce the TPE in order to make a maximum offer to Deron Williams. Otherwise, it would count as Odom's FULL $8.2 million salary against the cap.

Can't sign Deron and then use the TPE after that unless you can clear Marion and Haywood off the cap completely without returning other salary.

Otherwise, great luck for Dallas. It's a good thing that the Clippers had interest in Odom on his actual contract as very few teams were in a position to make a move for him that he would actually play for (essentially LA teams and Miami). Then, they also just happened to have an expiring contract large enough to match that someone (Utah) was interested in taking on completely without forcing salary into the equation! Worked out perfectly for them.

Can someone breakdown where they sit no cap wise pre-amnesty?

Also, JES who do you think this leads to?
D.Will?
Nash +... Kaman?

Unlike other Mav fans, I never thought Deron will come to a team who's best players are all 33 or older. I think Nash or Kaman can be had for the the $8.9 mil (not $8.2 as scoot says) n a 2 year deal. The other maybe will settle for the MLE. No amnesty of Haywood or Marion and keep all bird rights.

Kaman / Haywood / Mahinimi
Nowitzki / Wright / James (R)
Marion / Crawford (R)
Beaubois / Terry / Cunningham (R)
Nash / Kidd / Jones

I like that more than Deron/Marion/Dirk and a whole bunch of nobodies.

Oh, one other thing.

This trade gets Dallas out of the Luxury tax for the 2011-12 season.

Are you sure? Under the old CBA the luxury tax was based on the payroll on the last day of the season, not the operational year, mostly to prevent teams from getting out of it with moves like this. As far as I know the new CBA is no different.

I could be wrong. :dontknow:
I thought today was the last day of the season.

I also thought I have seen trades like this by other teams to get below the tax. But I could be wong.

They also could go for the trifecta of..

Deron
Dirk
Dwight

If the cap goes up, Deron and dwight take alight pay cuts, they continue to dump salary its almost feasible.

Or what about leaving the door open for just Dwight next year leaving some flexibility for this season.

You're right. Deal happened in 2011-12 season, not 2012-13 season. Oversight on my part.

Otherwise, all S&T's have to be 3 year deals. Sure, I think the 3rd year can be non-guaranteed, but it at least has to appear as a 3 year deal.

And without any other moves, they're way over the luxury tax in cap holds right now with Kidd and Terry factored in. Essentially, if Kidd and Terry are renounced, they'd be roughly at $47 or $48 million with cap holds. Waiving Carter could clear another $1.1 million. At this point, if they could move Carter, Roddy B, and DoJo for no salary in this upcoming year, they'd have cap room to make a max offer to Deron, and could get away without amnestying anyone. Then they could use the room MLE. There's options there for them.

Or, they could forget Deron, and re-sign Kidd and Terry, and let the other cap holds put them over the cap in number. Use the TPE for $8.9 million (or maybe $9 million, can't remember if $100 grand is added to the TPE anymore) in trades over the next year. Essentially, run with the same roster and simply add up to $9 million in trade and use the MLE. Nothing fancy, but still improve the team. Probably bind them in cap hell for the next 3 years, too, though.

Carter was signed under the new CBA, which means his cap hit can be spread over 2x + 1 of the remaining years.

$4 mil guaranteed / (2x2 + 1) = $800K cap hit.

That said, many teams woul want him at that payroll, including me.

Actually, All three players you mentioned can be moved for no cap hit and possibly even bring us something of value in return.

I can actually see a Haywood/Carter trade netting us pure cap space.

Marion, as good as he his can be moved, but I am not sure how many teams with TPEs and cap room can aquire him.

From Utah's point of view, I'm a little surprised we took on Mo at his salary, but
- he will help, especially with shooting
- he's only a one-year commitment
- KOC always liked him.

So it's fine with me. I do wonder if this means that Utah will continue to push for playoff success this year, which might mean NOT trading Big Al or Millsap after all. Guess we'll see how the season goes.
