Has the new CBA killed the trade market?
I have a question for my fellow posters: Has the new CBA killed the trade market? First round picks are now gold. Players on rookie contracts have their values inflated while well paid veterans have their values discounted. Teams no longer seem willing to go over the salary cap even for half a season. Is this a long-term trend or is the number of teams tanking due to this year's draft making it worse because of teams that are willing to stay bad? It just seems like there a lot of teams at or near the cap and trades during the season are becoming rare.

When were they not gold? Teams have valued 1st round picks for a long time.

This was the same under the old CBA as well.
Teams no longer seem willing to go over the salary cap even for half a season.
Right now there are only 5 teams that are under the salary cap.

Contenders use to give up first rounders routinely in order to get immediate help.
Contenders use to give up prospects fairly regularly in order to get immediate help.
It seems like fair contracts for good role players are considered bad contracts. Instead of swapping a good role player on a decent contract for the same, now teams only want to trade for expiring contracts. The in- season trade market just seem really stagnant to me.

They still do. Brooklyn gave up 3 1st rounders to Boston. Lakers gave up 1st rounders for Nash.

The trade market usually seems stagnant in December, I would say that the new CBA has effected the trade market but not with the examples you gave. Teams do not want to pay the increased luxury tax fines and they do not want to be repeat offenders. There are teams like OKC and Boston who are extremely close to the edge of paying luxury taxes so they are probably more hesitant to add salary under the new CBA. Also the amnesty rule affected the trade market by eliminating so many bad contracts that teams wanted to get rid of. Especially having multiple years to use the amnesty, gave teams the option to wait it out and they were not forced to trade their horrible contracts right away. If it wasn't for the Amnesty guys like Gilbert Arenas would still be on the books. It seems like fair contracts for good role players are considered bad contracts. Instead of swapping a good role player on a decent contract for the same, now teams only want to trade for expiring contracts. The in- season trade market just seem really stagnant to me.

The push to shorter contracts has reduced the trade market a bit, as now there's a bit more roster shuffling via FA and less via trade.
Still, there's been a couple of trades already this year, and there usually aren't that many until near the deadline.

Of late there are also more GM disciples embracing the Spurs school of thought who tend to build via draft rather than trade and consider salary/tax in each transaction.
