Hou/NYK/Minn: Brewer/Shump&JR/&1st

Post#1 » by HartfordWhalers » Thu Dec 18, 2014 6:59 pm

Houston in:
Corey Brewer
Iman Shumpert

Houston out:
2017 Hou 1st* (Next available, lotto protected, if not transferred before 2021 becomes a 2021 2nd and cash)
2015 Knicks 2nd
Troy Daniels

Knicks in:
Troy Daniels

Knicks out:
Shumpert
JR Smith
Cash

Minnesota in:
JR Smith
2017 Houston 1st
2015 Knicks 2nd
Cash

Minnesota out:
Corey Brewer

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=oaxhuz3

Why?

Houston gets Brewer and Shump to strengthen the rotation, for a distant 1st and a 2nd they have little roster room for.
Knicks use Shumpert and maybe 1m cash to dump Smith, clearing the books for next year.
Minnesota finds a 1st for Brewer, by eating a contract. Ideally they tell JR to stay away, and hope he opts out?

(Feel free to move the Knicks 2nd around and tell me who needs more value).

I wouldn't take on a guy like JR Smith with the young Wolves roster for a 2017 1st for a team like Houston who has Harden and Howard locked up. If this was the NO pick then it may be worthwhile to simply try to keep him away or buy out the final year. Knicks probably need to send more value Houston's way if they are increasing that pick as well, I don't think they can move Smith by simply attaching an expiring Shump.

Ditto. I don't want JR. Smith anywhere near the young Wolves.

It's a shame he's JR Smith, because if he was just a normal guy/contract, the concept is ok.

Pretty sure the idea is that JR Smith never sets foot in a Wolves facility. Simply is a contract on the books in order to get a better asset for Brewer.

If I'm going to pay $6.4 mil, not just in cash but in payroll, for a future 1st, I'd rather not toss in Corey Brewer.

Agreed but don't think that asset is worth what its going to cost to keep Smith away. If the popular sentiment is Brewer is worth a TPE and a 2nd does that mean paying Smith for the next year and a half to stay away only get them a 2017 1st from a team that should be good at that point? Thats paying something to the effect of $9 million (half of this season and him picking up his option) for the pick if you can't reach a buyout.

I look at it as:
Brewer for TPE and Knicks 2nd
Hou 1st for taking JR Smith
Cash as extra incentive.

Thats pretty much what Milwaukee did with Dudley (Milwaukee sent back a 2nd but also some current salary). Cleveland did with Thornton (also threw in Zeller), and not far off what happened with Lin.

~9m for a late first seems the market.

Personally think it would take more than the 2017 Hou 1st to eat Smith from the Wolves pov, not enough upside in the pick to potentially pay $9 mill in salary for it.

Difference between Smith and the players above is they can actually provide some on court value, the Wolves would never want Smith to step foot in the facility it would be $9 million for a pick that doesn't even project to be very valuable. NO pick on the other hand is probably worth the $9 mill, but as I said NY is really the team that needs to add more value because imo an expiring Shump and a 2 doesn't get Smith out of town.

The problem is that a young team like the Wolves does not want JR Smith anywhere near their team, meaning they would have to payout the remaining $10+M of his salary for absolutely nothing. While Dudley and Thornton were over payed, they weren't bad guys so they could keep them on the team and get some fraction of their salaries in production (and potentially use them as salary filler or an expiring in other trades).

If MIN was going to use it's payroll to take on JR Smith's contract, and dump it for zero production, the piece that benefits the Knicks is the Love TPE. It's just big enough to absorb Smith, and MIN has just enough room under the lux to take on that salary, this year and next. it benefits the Knicks not just because it gives them more cap space next year, but all of Smith's payroll is over the lux this season.

I don't know how much this saves the Knicks, and I know MIN would have to buyout Turiaf and Hummell to do the deal, so the question would be wnether NYK could find appropriate compensation.

The Wolves get to pay a redundant Smith and get damn little. At BESt the lame pick is years away and protected a lot. It's aimed to let NY dump salary...and NY will always overspend ASAP.. so...they unload rotation SG's fow a raw $ dump but the other teams likely will not want to ADD $. I'm not big on doing hyper protected rd 1's that ...at best.. don't carry much value. You kill your ability to trade picks for YEARS That can cost you a deal that MATTERS.

At BEST... Houston pays 2 guys to be bench behind Harden.
CENSORED... No comment.
