And I don't hate a Barnes/reasonable incentive for Kuz deal. Something like Barnes/Vez/13 for Kuz/Kispert/26. Gets the Kings a bench shooter as well.

That should be acceptable to Sac. Draft Holmes.

I suggested this the other day with Duarte/Sasha in place of Davion. Don't think that change matters for Utah but probably important for Sac. I'm definitely on board with or without Monk coming back.

If monk bolts we use MLE on a wing. Wouldn't mind giving Bruce Brown full MLE for 3 years.

Fox - Keon - Keegan - Collins - Sabonis
Mitchell - Clarkson - Brown - Lyles

I'm okay with this core 9 even if we can't bring Monk back.

I love the idea of Jerami Grant on the Kings. He can play both the 3 & 4, and plays good defense.

I would also love to see Bruce Brown on the Kings, as he can defend 1-3, and does the nitty gritty that don’t show up on the box score.

Trade 1:
#13 + K Huerter + C Duarte + D Mitchell
for
J Grant

Trade 2:
H Barnes + ‘25 POR 2nd
for
B Brown

Fox / Brown / Murray / Grant/ Sabonis
Monk / Ellis / (FA-TBD)? / Sasha / Lyles

Add a backup wing through FA, and that’s a team that can go deep in the playoffs.

I'd do the 2nd trade. Iffy on the 1st.

I suggested something similar with Portland that their fans didn't mind.

Huerter + Barnes + 13 for Kris Murray + Grant

Now if we expand that with Toronto and Bruce Brown.

Kings out: Sasha, Duarte, Huerter, Barnes, 13, Portland 1st

Kings in: Brown, Kris, Grant

Fox - Keon - Murray - Grant - Sabonis
Mitchell - Monk - Kris Murray - Lyles

Add a veteran center in free agency. I'd roll with that.

This. It takes adding Kris.

By adding Ellis and Grant to the starting unit and Kris to the bench, plus the emergence of Davion that would be enough for Monte to roll into next season being able to claim he made real moves. Assuming Monk returns.

I’d like to see a hyper athletic center replace McGee too, and bring back Len.

They had a disappointing fizzle to the end of their season. Monk and Hueter getting hurt didn't help. I have no idea what they can do for next yr Sabonis and Fox are great and Murray seems good. I'd say they need depth.

Obviously you still need to know who is and isn't available so until players fall through the cracks you don't know what CAN happen.

* Ask Domantis Sabonis kindly to learn how to make a jump shot
* Harrison Barnes/Davion for John Collins
* Huerter/Lyles/'25 Port 2nd/'25 Sac 2nd/'26 Sac 2nd for WCJ/Ingles
* Beg Domantis Sabonis to learn how to make a jump shot
* If Memphis looks to cut salary offer MLE TPE for Brandon Clarke. Bit of a gamble, but the upside is worth it and fits need/age demo etc.
* Sign Monk 4/$78m. That will be the highest offer any way.
* Domas, look, we signed Monk for you. Now learn how to make a damn mid range jump shot.
* Sign Kessler Edwards to 4 year deal (4/$14m)
* Sign Len to 1 year Vet Min

If they keep the pick. Draft BPA that falls, there will be someone. Pray that its Cody Williams. I would like to see the FO trade it for future assets though.

Fox/Keon/Murray/WCJ/Sabonis
Monk/Ingles/Vezenkov/Clarke/Collins
Jones/Duarte/Vet Min/Vet Min/Len

Draft targets: Cody Williams/Ulrich Comche (trade down to late first, or use the 2nd rounder or combination of both)

Still lots of expiring money ($28m - Ingles/Sasha/Duarte/Len/Vet Min/Vet Min) to use for upgrades at the deadline.

There’s really two different scenarios that depend on if Monk resigns with the Kings…

If Monk Resigns

POR Gets: Kevin Huerter, Sasha Vezenkov, Chris Duarte, & #13
SAC Gets: Jerami Grant & #33

In addition to the trade, I would…
- Resign Kessler Edwards to a $2-$3 mil per year deal over 3 years (with a team option in the 3rd year)
- Resign Alex Len and JaVale McGee for bench depth at C
- Draft BPA at #33 and #45

PG - Fox / Mitchell
SG - Ellis / Monk / Jones
SF - Murray / Barnes / Edwards
PF - Grant / Lyles
C - Sabonis / Len / McGee
Picks - #33 / #45

With that roster, I’d go with a minutes rotation of…

PG - Fox (34) / Mitchell (10) / Monk (4)
SG - Ellis (24) / Monk (24)
SF- Murray (30) / Barnes (18)
PF - Grant (30) / Barnes (6) / Lyles (12)
C - Sabonis (34) / Len (8) / Lyles (6)

Fox = 34 min
Sabonis = 34 min
Murray = 30 min
Grant = 30 min
Monk = 28 min
Ellis = 24 min
Barnes = 24 min
Lyles = 18 min
Mitchell = 10 min
Len = 8 min

If Monk Walks

POR Gets: Harrison Barnes, Kevin Huerter, Sasha Vezenkov, Chris Duarte, & #13
SAC Gets: Jerami Grant & Malcolm Brogdon

In addition to the trade, I would…
- Resign Kessler Edwards to a $2-$3 mil per year deal over 3 years (with a team option in the 3rd year)
- Resign Alex Len and JaVale McGee for bench depth at C
- Draft BPA at #45

PG - Fox / Mitchell
SG - Ellis / Brogdon / Jones
SF - Murray / Edwards
PF - Grant / Lyles
C - Sabonis / Len / McGee
Picks - #45

With that roster, I’d go with a minutes rotation of…

PG - Fox (34) / Mitchell (14)
SG - Ellis (20) / Brogdon (28)
SF - Murray (30) / Edwards (14) / Ellis (4)
PF - Grant (30) / Lyles (18)
C - Sabonis (34) / Len (10) / Lyles (4)

Fox = 34 min
Sabonis = 34 min
Murray = 30 min
Grant = 30 min
Brogdon = 28 min
Ellis = 24 min
Lyles = 22 min
Mitchell = 14 min
Edwards = 14 min
Len = 10 min

Would absolutely agree on the two different scenarios the Kings are facing.

However, how much do you think Grant improves the Kings' D?
Are we talking in theory, or what he really is?

If people are trading Grant to the Kings because he can boost the offense, then sure. But he hasn't been a good defender for a long time. This isn't Jerami Grant in OKC/Denver. This is Jerami Grant in Detroit/Portland and they are 2 very different players.

Not that Harrison Barnes is bad but he's the wrong fit for Toronto. It's clear this team is trying to rebuild. I don't see bringing in a backup to win a few more games it's the right move especially next year when Ace Bailey and Cooper Flagg are clearly the best prospects in recent years not named Victor Wembanyama.

I think The Kings should be looking at a player better than Bruce Brown for their pick and Barnes I think a mobile defensive big should be higher on their wishlist than a wing

Let’s put it this way…we were a top defensive team to end the year with Harrison Barnes at PF. I repeat…Harrison Barnes. At the very least, do you think Grant helps us more on defense than Barnes? I sure do.

Now the comment around him being different defensively than he was on OKC/DEN is fair, but Grant has only played 4 seasons where his team had a winning record. That was with OKC and DEN. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the level of effort increase defensively on a team like the Kings where we are competing for a playoff spot. But even if the level of effort doesn’t increase during the regular season, you have to consider the level Grant can get to defensively when it matters most.

For example, would you rather have a player who gives it his all the entire season and is above average defensively both during the regular season and the playoffs or would you rather have a player who is average defensively during the regular season but is great/excellent defensively late in the 4th quarter and in the playoffs? The latter player gives us a higher ceiling and that’s how I sort of how I view Grant. And that’s very similar to how Fox played defense as well. He’d coast for a lot of the game but late in the game or in the playoffs, he had the skills, tools, IQ, length, and athleticism to become a great defender.

The only difficulty I see is that the draft occurs before FAcy. So the player you select at #13 has to have interest to Portland.

Grant has 10 times the starts as Monk.

Monk is a very common prototype; small sg that cannot play pg with weak defense.

Grant has his warts but this shouldn’t be a debate.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Monk in FA.

Can Grant be great/excellent defensively in the POs? I would question that TBH. What gives you any sort of confidence that Grant will turn into this defensive gem in the POs? Is he suddently going to do something he never has?
His grand defensive season in 2019-20 was a failure in the POs. Sure he had his moments, but even when you go to the stats, it doesn't paint him as a plus defender.

Then, the very next season things changed for him. He was a #1 option and he hasn't looked back at defense. He's never been a rebounder so he won't offer anything there, not that Barnes did either, but that really shouldn't be the comparison.
After Grant went from being a defensive role player to a #1 scoring option, not only did his defense become non existent, he started to miss games.
Grant is a really good player, don't get me wrong, but his defensive days are behind him and IMO if you trade for him you need to (or should) trade Keegan Murray as well because if you stuff him into being the #5 scoring option he will never develop and his trade value won't be as good as it is now.

I think it's time to move on from Barnes. What would it take for the Kings to get DFS?

One of the biggest challenges of building a team around Sabonis is your have a 5 that doesn't offer rim protection, so you need to get creative. The hardest thing in the league to find is a rim protector who can also space the floor. But I think Jeremi Grant makes a lot of sense here. Although not a true rim protector, Grant is a versatile defender who has developed into a 40% 3 point shooter. A front court of Murray/Grant provides a good mix of defense, shooting and versatility to compliment Sabonis. Something built around Harrison Barnes (who can be flipped to another team as he's still a useful piece on a decent contract) cap filler and SAC's pick in this years draft - a lotto pick in a weak draft - feels like a good starting point.

The point is that Grant has shown that he’s capable of great defense when he wants to commit himself. That has taken a step back with a much larger offensive role. He would not be a #1 option on the Kings and he’d be playing in much more meaningful games on a team trying to not only make the playoffs but advance in the playoffs.

Again, I see him in a similar light as Fox. Is he going to give you great defense for 48 min every game? No. But he has the ability to turn it on when it matters. That’s a potential ceiling raiser vs. the guy that gives you consistent above average defense year around but doesn’t have a 2nd gear come the 4th quarter/playoff time.

As for him missing games, a lot of that has to do with teams shutting him down to help with the tank. During his 4 seasons where he played on teams above .500, he played in 97.8% of eligible games (which is equivalent to playing 80.2 games per year). Considering the Kings would be pushing for the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Grant play a healthy amount of games.
