outrageous PHX/SAS/ATL trade

Post#1 » by HornetJail » Thu May 2, 2024 8:59 pm

Phoenix trades Durant, Booker, Nurkic

Phoenix receives 2024 SAS 1st, 2024 TOR 1st, 2024 ATL 1st, 2025 SAC 1st, 2025 CHI 1st, 2025 ATL 1st, Clint Capela, Tre Jones, DeAndre Hunter, Zach Collins, ~$45M in cap savings (minus the cost of their new draft picks)

I'm not sure nuke is even a strong enough word here, but if the Suns want to rebuild, here's the quick and easy way out, how about two guaranteed top 10 picks in this draft, a potential third top 10 pick if Toronto falls in the lotto, an unprotected 2025, two other protected 2025s (that have multiple years remaining on protection), and some vets to keep a little structure around the rest of the team so things don't get completely out of hand. The hope would be drafting a young nucleus right away so you don't bottom out for too long. This move also completely frees Phoenix from the luxury tax next season.

Tre Jones/Beal/Little/Hunter/Capela
+three top 10 picks, #22, Allen, and minimums

SAS trades cap space, Keldon, Collins, Jones, SAS 2024 1st, TOR 2024 1st (top 6 prot), 2025 CHI 1st (top 10 prot), 2025 ATL 1st, 2026 ATL 1st swap returned, 2027 ATL 1st returned

SAS receives Durant, Trae

The Spurs go win-now around Wemby, utilizing their cap space and draft picks to add two big time stars and go for it all right away, without losing anything from their young core but Keldon. Spurs still retain all future Spurs picks as well as the swaps they got from Boston and Dallas.

Trae Young/Vassell/Durant/Sochan/Wemby, no idea what the bench looks like tbh

Atlanta trades Trae, Capela, Hunter, #10, 2025 SAC 1st (top 12 prot)

Atlanta receives Devin Booker, Nurkic, Keldon Johnson, own 2026 swap returned, 2027 ATL 1st

Atlanta makes a major change at guard, without downgrading. Also completely reshape their frontcourt and hand the starting C job to Okongwu in the process. They also swap out picks to regain control over some of their future ones in case things don't work out and they need to rebuild.

I can't think of a plausible scenario where this trade is better for the Suns than just standing pat.

it’s huge.

But I feel like Keldon should go to Phoenix instead of Hunter? Feels unnecessary fluff anding Hunter here.. And take out the Sac first/future Atl first swap? Booker has more value than Trae, right? But Atlanta seems to be winning the “10, Sac first, Capela for Nurk, swap, 2027 unprotected first” part..

And SAS then owes Phoenix more value IMO, this doesn’t really seem the dream draft to have three top 10 picks..

As a Suns fan, I have to remind OP that we don't have any of our 1sts going forward. As such, blowing the team up makes 0 sense cause the only team that will benefit from it is the Nets.

I agree about trading Booker/KD and think we will trade.....1 of them. The other will be kept and rebuilt around with the assests we get from said trade.

Value doesn't seem that far off, but I don't like the Suns getting 3 picks in this draft and 3 next draft. Would rather have those 6 picks spread out over 4-5 drafts

If that is the case then KD us traded. If not, he would ask out immediately rather than a rebuild.

Personally don't think Trae makes sense in this trade. Durant makes a ton of sense. Now, the Suns aren't get two top-10 picks for him, but the Spurs have a lot of ways to make a deal happen. Young and his contract would sink that team.

Something where the Spurs buy Murray for the Suns and then eat the difference with cap space to either save the Suns a ton of salary or give them a TE to use with their 2024 first makes sense. The Suns the get PG they want, the Hawks get to cash out of DJM and the Spurs get the vet mentor for Vassell and Wemby while still continuing their rebuild.

I could see something smaller around Trae and Okongwu for Durrant.

I'd normally say that you have to wait for the lottery results, which are only a couple weeks away, but I think it won't matter in this draft and with this package going back to the Suns. It's going to be a hard pass from them.
