Just filed: Mavs and Nets have reached a verbal agreement to swap Kris Humphries and Shawne Williams for Nets' Eddie Najera, sources say

Dallas Gets:
Eddie Najera

New Jersey Gets:

Might cut Sean Williams

Deal might not be formally completed before Monday but Nets will waive Shawne Williams and have to release one more (possibly Sean Williams)

Moves like this are good for the NBA because they get rid of guys who shouldn't be on rosters anyway.

Najera has a history in Dallas and the Nets save some cash next summer. Good deal I suppose.

Most Mavs fans are wondering why though? Humphries is a younger cheaper version of Najera so why trade for the old version that's on a 3 year contract besides getting rid of Williams unless there's another trade on the way which i doubt.

Saves Cuban money and it's not like it comes on some massive talent downgrade, sort of.

If we assume that there is no cash changing hands and that Dallas cuts Najera before July 1, here is the financial breakdown. This does not include the luxury tax payments:

2009/2010: Dallas saves $2,316,067 (in terms of luxury tax, from a pure salary standpoint, it's more like $1.4 million)

2010/11: Dallas saves $700,000 (assuming Najera bought out)

2011/12: Dallas pays $2,250,000

For New Jersey, they shave a year off Najera's deal. Considering cap holds and Najera's contract, this deal only cuts $200K to their 2010/11 cap room. While Humphries is nothing more than a second rate backup big, with his youth and energy he's a lot more useful than Najera. I also figure it's a lot easier to dump Humphries down the road than Najera.

Najera is a marketing god in Mexico, maybe that's why they're taking on the extra year :).

Yes, it sounds like you pick one up the size of Shawne's contract (about $2.4 million)

Humphries might help the Nets a little bit. Could be a good situation for him in the short term.

I forget where I read it but I think I saw somewhere he was in like the top 20 most marketable players in the league.

There's a lot of mexican-americans and there's a lot more in Texas than NJ.

Realistically speaking all the players involved suck and will have no impact on their new teams. Awesome.

Looks like Sean Williams is done as a Net I wouldn't be surprised if some team picks him up for the minimum.

Well i think Dallas is one of those teams that might be interested in Sean, and hopefully they are. He would fit great here as a 3rd big to come off the bench.

Eddie's back. I always love his hustle but not at the expense of Humphries.
It's a pure financial move in terms of tax saving and profit making.

Seeing as the Nets have one of the worst PF rotations in history, I'm glad we're getting someone new to get a look at.

Purely financial move for Dallas. Najera was a fan favorite in Dallas and if he can play as much as Hump did here it will be a so-so bball move. 10 minutes or so every 3rd game.
I think NJN will be pleased with Humphries effort. He has been a good reserve when he gets playing time. He is still a little raw but with some good coaching and playing time should be able to develop nicely. He just not getting any PT here behind Dirk and Gooden.
Not a glamourous trade but one that fits both teams. I look forward to following the Nets and Humphries progress as a developing player. Hope he does well and gets the playing time he deserves.
