Making The Step: Calderon, additional assets at deadline

Post#1 » by nivisi9 » Fri Jan 29, 2010 11:24 pm

We have heard of the so called, "next step" regularly, on and on, how this team is one legit step away from being a true contender. Sure they've recently shown they can be a good team, and continue to grow....but still the consensus is, this team needs just a little something more to be taken as a serious threat..

and with recent reports that Calderon would rather play a bigger role on another team if given the oppurtunity, and speculation even beforehand that he could be used as bait at the deadline, and of coarse the pressure of the Bosh conundrum...there might be that chance

we hear alot of the same names speculated: most often Caron Butler, Kevin Martin, Rip Hamilton, Kenyon Martin etc.

but there is one superstar, currently on the block, on a team in a desperate situation, that seems could be had....Monta Ellis

of anyone, Ellis would address exactly what this team is looking to obtain...he would fill right in for the departure of Calderon, can be used as a combo guard, creates his own offense, and become that scoring wing threat this team is desperate for...

if there was any way to package Calderon and any remaining assets, now or future, without completely ripping apart this team, to acquire Ellis? that's the deal you take. In case you havent been paying attention...

The Warriors have zero point zero interest in trading Monta for Calderon. No chance!

...except Ellis isn't really on the block and a deal centered around Jose for Ellis makes no sense because he doesn't fit in Nellie's system, no matter what 'remaining assets' we package. The Warriors won't trade their franchise player for our backup point guard. The Warriors aren't desperate at all... they are going to get a high pick in the draft this year. Ellis is locked up so no worries of him bolting. I don't see us wanting to give up on Bargnani or Derozan, so really there's nothing we could offer that could get Golden State to trade him to us. I'd love to see Ellis on the Raps too, but we just don't have the right trading pieces to make it happen.

you think Calderon would be viewed by any of the other 29 teams as "bait"?

depends on how you define 'bait, but maybe...if what the Raptors wanted to do was hook a weak player on a bloated contract.

Calderon just doesn't have much value. For a lot of teams, it may even be negative value because of his contact. What the Raptors would need to do is add bait to a Calderon deal in order to get rid of him, and other then Bosh, I'm not sure they have enough

All I want for Calderon is a prime Bruce Bowen. Really good defender who can space the floor and not use up too many shots. We have enough scoring, and do not need another big time scorer. There are barely enough shots to go around as is, with Bosh, Bargs, and Turk.

Someone to slow down Lebron, PP, etc.

I'm not really sure the equivalent is available on the market right now, unfortunately.

It is bad, but Monta for Calderon is worse.
