The one thing i'll give those hair metal bands of the 80's compared to today is that for the most part, it seems like the days of the big rock concerts are mostly over.

In my teens, while i was more into punk and seeing shows in smaller venues, i did attend plenty of regular rock bands concerts like Motley Crue, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, early Metallica, Alice in Chains, Guns N' Roses etc.

Between all the punk shows and bigger bands, there were always concerts to attend. In my teens i must have attended 30-40 various concerts/shows. Big concerts at places like County Stadium and Alpine Valley were fairly common, not just shows at arenas and clubs. What great fun it was going to shows at Alpine Valley, the actual concert was almost secondary to the party..

Today there really doesn't seem to be many huge rock bands anymore that go on big world tours each year like in my teens. Not sure why, but maybe it's because of the internet where so many kids/young adults listen more to random songs by tons of groups instead of in my teens, you had to buy full albums and then CD's of bands you liked. So you got more attached to those bands and when those bands would go out on long tours to showcase their new record/CD, you'd go see them.

Saw this group (among others) at the Majestic this past weekend, thought they deserved a little recognition. They are local talent trying to make it. They were really great live, they are called Icarus Himself. Here are my two favorites.

The thing is the music I listened to when I was a teen and in college sounds like the equivalent of you listened to. Most of the bands I played regularly were on minor labels and played shows in tiny venues. I listened to that stuff for the better part of a decade. But I'm 30 now and I'm only now getting into stuff that was being played in the 70s and 80s. One of my favorite things to do is open Pandora, tune to Bob Seger radio, and listen to classic rock that as a teen or college kid I didn't appreciate.

The 80s hair metal stuff I'm listening to now isn't so much a reflection of what I think is good, it's more so that it's completely different from what you hear now. Last fall I think I went a couple months listening to nothing but 90s alt-rock, bemoaning the fact that you don't hear stuff like that anymore.

The **** on the radio these days makes me want to stick a pencil in my ear.

Well, DB...

They say when you hit 30 you stop seeking out new music...

Between 2005 and about 2010 I found a lot of incredible new music that was mostly not played on the radio and reminded me the most of 90s alt rock (my favorite era, grew up in it). It's fairly well known now, but I found some of those bands when they were "on minor labels, mostly playing in small venues" like Arcade Fire, Ratatat, MGMT, Muse, M83, Bloc Party, Silversun Pickups, etc. (I saw all of these bands at small venues before they have either headlined or have played larger venues.

I think music like that still exists. I agree that some of it is switching to electronic/semi-electronic (which even as a music junkie, I love some prog house, etc.), but I think you guys are looking up the wrong avenues.

I'm 25 and will probably be at that point shortly where I feel like it "just isn't like it used to be."

I'm still seeking that out and going to shows, but I have had less time now that I'm not in college. I still think that some of the acts (such as Lollapalooza the past few years that I've gone to) are great. Check out Coachella's lineup this year. It's great.

The radio totally sucks (AM and FM at least - XM is a-maz-ing). But if you know where to look you can still find great music. Does it sound just like it did in the 80s or 90s? No. Music has evolved, just like it always has and will continue to. So, like GJ says, I can see how some people would love what they grew up with and not want to listen to any of the 'crap kids are listening to these days' (even if it's actually good music). But I know some people who continue to seek out new music. My boss is in her late 40s and is a total music junkie, new stuff included.

I actually like music today more than I did growing up. Now don't get me wrong, I grew up on 90s alternative and popular rock also and I still love that, but I love music today. The pop stuff on the radio is atrocious but I love finding and listening to good indie, non-radio alternative, folk revival, etc. The music that was popular in the 90s is better than the music that's popular now - I would agree with that.

I like you. You have awesome taste!

Seeing Ryan Adams in Melbourne in a few weeks, and weighing up whether to see Kasabian and The Vaccines this weekend. Hoping I win a ticket tomorrow, if not I may need to fork out $70 for them. Hmmm.

Trying to save money at the moment, so trying t avoid buying new music. In love with Paradise by Coldplay. Gets stuck in my head all the time. Other day I was singing it as I was getting ready to head out, jumped in my car, and the radio started up and was singing along to the same part. Freaky.

I was more commenting on the concert aspect today. I have a daughter that just graduated from high school, but when she was still in school and i knew her friends also, it just didn't seem like they as a whole were as into attending concerts as was the case for me/my friends in my teens.

I also noticed that there weren't really any huge rock bands anymore like was the case in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and part of the 90's. During those times, fans of big bands like say Ozzy, Metallica, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc would be fans a long time, buy their next album/CD, and then often see those bands once to multiple times. It was a big deal when the bands would come to town and everything from stadiums to arenas, or venues like Alpine Valley would sell out.

Of course bands still go out on tours today, but i do think that the internet allows for younger folks today to sample from so many different bands/types of music and not having to buy full albums that there isn't the same kind of allegiance to bands. A strong allegiance that would lead to lots of people dying to go to not just one concert of a favorite band, but go nearly whenever that band comes to town. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just an observation. Hell, i regularly search out new music to me online.

I'm obviously not in that 14-20ish age demographic anymore, so i could be wrong about the whole show/concert attending nature of people in that age demographic today. Maybe there are a lot more concerts available for them to attend and they do attend the shows, it just seems like to me though that a consistent flow of big rock acts to see live isn't around to see like it was before my teens and in my teens where i generally went to around 4-8 shows a year, sometimes more.
