I'm 39, so I obviously grew up in the 80's. Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil was a life-changer. I loved heavy metal, but also loved The Cure, Depeche Mode, and many others from that era. The 80's wasn't all crap. However, Pink Floyd is my fave of all time and I'd probably pick the 60's and 70's as the best overall decades of bands with staying power, in terms of timeless music, that transfers from generation to generation.
That said, I get really confused when classic bands write new songs and make new records. What's the point? When they go on tour, no one wants to hear any new songs. No one. Van Halen were gods. All of them. When it came to guitar-god rock, you simply didn't f**k with Van Halen. This new album is shockingly very, very good. The single Tattoo sucks. But most of it - Dave sounds amazing and Eddie just shreds it. Either way, I ain't paying no $150 to see them on tour - I saw it in 2007 and once was enough and thankfully, they didn't have any "new" songs then and I don't need to hear any!
This is what makes music awesome - everyone gets off differently from music. As a life-long musician myself, I can appreciate that.
