When Giannis ran down the court on that fast break where he passed off, that bloke on defence was **** himself I reckon!

The pass he made when it looked like he was about to take off from 12' was the cream...and was that last block controlled? Certainly looked like he took a little off and directed it to the teammate.

Giannis looks like he is too fast for fiba basketball usual rythme when he is running in transition.
He visibly holds down his speed most of the time. :)

He looked like some kind of highly evolved super-human from the future bearing down on a mere mortal there.

I saw only the last game against Lithuania in the Acropolis tournament.
My impression was that Giannis only scored, when he decided to play selfishly. :-? He didn't get the ball that much in offense. How was it in the other games?
No hay banda.

He was good, out best player overall in these tournaments.
His defense was his biggest point along with insanely good and fast plays at 3 with addition of some great shooting.

Since things are quiet until Acropolis Tournament, a little offline post (it is Greek NT related though) as it was recently mentioned again on some Greek Sports media.

A trip down the Memory lane, in 1983 NT Greece played a friendly game against North Carolina. The only game that the best player who played in the NBA (M.Jordan), against the best player that never played in the NBA (N.Galis), met.

N.Galis was guarded by M.Jordan on that game and scored 50 points.

Image

I don't know if N.Galis was known in the USA after his College years. He was only picked on 68th position of 1979 draft, despite having 27.5 points , almost 4 rebounds and 4 assists on his last year at Seton Hall. So he decided to play in Greece. The rest is history he was 11 consecutive years top scorer in the League, he finished his career with an avg of 30+ points. He was our Jordan for the poor...

I remember one of his lasts games when he played for Panathinaikos and he was already 36 years old, he was playing against teh team he played all his life (Aris Salonika) and he had 13/13 FG and 19 assists !

Drazen Petrovic had said : "If I'm the Devil's son, then Galis is the Devil himself." I'd love to play in the same team with him so I can pass the ball to him to score!"

The funniest quote though came from CSKA coach Kricovski : "I had given specific instructions on how to defend against the other 4 players. As for Nikos, we just had to sit down and pray!"

"If I'm the Devil's son, then Galis is the Devil himself.", Drazen Petrovic.

"I'd love to play in the same team with him so I can pass the ball to him to score!", Drazen Petrovic.

"Drazen is my brother, but I vote for Galis.", Aleksandar Petrovic.

"I have the feeling that if Galis wants to score a basket, he will score, no matter what the opponent does. He is always determined to succeed", Arvydas Sabonis.

"I've seen Galis do things that I have seen neither Lakers nor Celtics do", Bob McAdoo.

"I had given specific instructions on how to defend against the other 4 players. As for Nikos, we just had to sit down and pray!", Vojcek Kricovski, CSKA Moscow coach.

"There is only one way I can think of to stop Nikos from scoring! Lock him up in the hotel!", Roud Harevain, Maccabi Tel-Aviv head coach.[23] "I wish if I was Galis "

My all Time Hero of Greek Basketball and besides MJ my youth time hero of Basketball

I think it's like Diego Maradona in Football. Since Galis and Maradona there have not been Players to lead
their teams to Championschips on their own.

Galis literally beat the Soviet Union on his own

One final post from my side regarding Galis.

Many friends I have from the States often ask why is basket so popular and successful in Greece a relative small European country.
Well this is the defining moment that changed the Basketball history in Greece. Eurobasket 1987. It was held in Greece and Greece beat the great Soviet union at the final on OT 103-101.
After that every kid started playing basketball on the streets.

Someone posted the best of Galis on that tournament in slow motion. And it is great to see how he could score at unreal FG% against huge opponents. Galis was 6 ft 0' !
Watch on the video how long he stays on air while faking directions with his hands ,and the arc he gives on his shoot. It was almost impossible to be blocked so he wasn't afraid to score near the basket as well.
The Center of USSR at that tournament was 7ft 3'.

Galis performance in the Eurobasket 1987 Tournament :

Win 109-77 against Romania : 44 Pts
Win 84-78 against Yugoslavia (D.Petrovic, A.Petrovic, Radja, Divac, Kukoc, Paspalj, Vrankovic, a.o. ) : 44 Pts
Loss 89-106 against Spain: 35 Pts
Loss 66-69 against USSR: 31 Pts
Win 89-62 against France : 34 Pts

QF
Win 90-78 against Italy : 38 Pts

SF:
Win 81-77 against Yugoslavia : 30 Pts

F
Win 103-101 against USSR: 40 Pts

I am also in Germany but born in Greece (though my parents are originally from Cyprus).
Will watch them on television. Due to business trips planned in September I will watch from TV/PC what I can.
However if we advance and can grab tickets I am tempted to go to Lille, it is a 5:30-6 hr easy drive.

A Milwaukee visit is a definite visit for me in the future if not this season then the next, which I hope to combine with some Craft Brewery visits in Minnesota, Chicago and Michigan. The problem is I bet the fishing is also good there, so I have to convince wife and kids that I will return
