Which former star players have been good GMs? Dumars is probably at the top of the list (and pretty lonely). Jerry West counts though that was a long time ago and he kind of lost it. Other recent GM-types I can think of who were former players (including non-stars):
Isiah Thomas
Larry Bird
Michael Jordan
Elgin Baylor
Kevin McHale
Chris Mullin
Danny Ainge
Kiki Vandeweghe
Danny Ferry
John Paxson
Jim Paxson
Otis Smith
Mike Dunleavy
I'm sure to be missing a bunch, but there's not much to like in that group. I'd be curious to know what types of backgrounds create the best GMs--one thing I liked about Hammond's hiring was that he had been a scout, assistant coach and personnel guy before becoming Dumars' #2.

I think most GMs were NBA players, although some had a higher profile than others. For example Pritchard is a former NBA player and an outstanding GM. Are there any GMs who didn't even play college ball? I know Hammond played some.

Pat Riley. 7 Division Titles, 1 NBA Title, 10 seasons in the playoffs in his 13 years In charge there. Maybe its just me but Id still put him ahead of Dumars.

That's a good one...I still never seem to think of him as an executive for some reason. Steve Kerr is another guy.
Looking over the list of current GMs I'd guess half were NBA players, though I might be missing on some.

Both GMs in the Finals this year were former players - Kupchak and Ainge - although I'm not sure how much of their team's success this past season was a result of their shrewd work. I think you could make just about anybody look good as a GM if teams were willing to giftwrap players like Garnett and Gasol for you in trades.
Nothing will not break me.

Geoff Petrie
Mitch Kupchak
So actually, every California team has a former player as a GM

Former players can be good coaches or GM's.
But the Superstar players rarely ever do well in those positions.

Seems funny to see the wiretap "Clippers talking with Okafor"
They could have had him outright in 2004 if for some insane reason they didn't trade their #2 pick for the #4 pick and Pedrag(?) in that dumb salary dump move to try and lure Kobe.

Jarvis Hayes aims to sign with the Nets for the Bi-annual exeption - 2 years, 4mil.
Looks like Bobby's got some competition

Does Kiki get a % from Fegan for the players that Kiki signs of his?
Nets signed both Jarvis and Najera today.
How long until Bobby starts bitching about not being the starter/getting his minutes there? A few days?
Including Hassell along with the other 2, they now have 3 better guys at his position. Yet Bobby is still the second highest paid player on that team, how sad. I wonder if they'll just buy him out to keep his attitude away from them.

Re: FA signings around the League
Here's the exact Bobby quote I was looking for the other day:
The team also introduced the 28-year-old Simmons, a native of Chicago and product of DePaul, who will enter his seventh NBA season. He slumped to just 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 71 games with the Bucks last year.
"It's going to be an opportunity for me to play around the basket and show my athleticism more," the 6-foot-6 Simmons said. "I just want to go out and have fun. That's what it's all about."
Who the heck was holding him back from using his athleticism here? Private Gump?
