OT: Does anyone know how I am related to this person?
One of my many relatives from Germany contacted me this morning, fairly out of the blue, after many years, and for the life of me I cannot remember how exactly we are related. I'm trying to explain it (how we are related) to some people, including my parents, who I tried calling to see if they remembered her and how we are related, but they didn't remember her at all.
I felt pretty stupid for not even remembering her myself at first, since apparently she has always remembered her time visiting here with me pretty vividly (she was over here way back when I was in high school so she was always tagging along with me to parties and other stuff I would do with friends). She seemed a bit hurt that I didn't remember her right away (she had to refresh my memory, at which point it all came back to me) so I didn't want to further make myself look like an idiot and also hurt her feelings again by asking her to explain to me how we are related.
Here's what I've figured out:
My grandmother's brother is her grandpa.
What does that make us?
Disclaimer for twirl:
I already can imagine what kind of comments you are going to make about this, and I'm going to stop you ahead of time. I've always thought of her as a cousin. We just happen to get along well for whatever reason because we are almost the same age (she is just under a year younger than me) and we spent a bunch of time together when she was last over here. I am not the kind of person who would be interested in a relative in that way
But I know how you think, so I figured I'd need the disclaimer

That would mean that one of her parents is a cousin of one of your parents, yes?
Basically you would be her 2nd cousin (2nd generation cousin).

So....... since this disclaimer is for twirly, is it fair game for the rest of us?

Don't ask me!
The whole thing gives me a headache and I can't seem to grasp it at all, which is why I am asking for people to explain it to me.

Alright, thanks.
Anyone else care to second that opinion? If so, that is what I will tell people then. 2nd cousin.

Since your grandmother's brother is your grand-uncle, I'm pretty sure that make you two second cousins.

How can you even put this disclaimer up when she needed to remind you who she was and you don't even know how you're related to her?

^Exactly. She sounds pretty fair game to me. Get some of that European booty. It's not like you are making a child, you'll be alright.

Isn't it third cousins? Her parents are your parents cousins. That would make her your parents second cousin. Doesn't that make you her third cousin?

Re: OT: Does anyone know how I am related to this person?
i don't think you have third cousins. i think it goes second cousins and then second cousins once removed or twice removed. I've got some ggenology software, and my dad is a morman. That should make me an expert on this subject.
my mother's uncle was Dewitt Buchanon - owner of the Old Ben coal mines in Southern Illinois. he has an education center named after him at Northwestern univ and he's a member of the US coal miners hall of fame. (yes they actually have one) I got zilch from him in his will. so what does that make him?
GAD, perhaps if you provided a picture of this person, it would provide us more motivativation to provide an honest answer.

3rd cousins. Your second cousin would be your Mom/Dad's cousin, the mother/father of the relative in question.

This thread was disappointing.......I saw it on my blackberry and started scrolling down thinking I'd see somehow GAD was related to Claudia Schiffer or something like that. Then realized it was some sort of Arkansas trivia game....
