4th Quarter / Crunch time: Who gets the last shot?

Post#1 » by ninja416 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:30 pm

Having seen every Bucks game this season, I couldn't help but notice the sheer lack of 4th quarter performers on this team. More specifically, we don't have a single/reliable go-to guy who would be given the last shot and be asked to make something happen. I couldn't help but notice how Skiles went to RJ 3 times in late game situations during last night's game against Minny. Naturally, RJ clanked all 3 shots. That made me question as to why would Skiles even keep RJ on the floor after his horrid game let alone run plays for him? Made me realize how much we lack that one dude whom we could run late game plays for and depend on to get a bucket.

So, what do you guys think? Who, in your opinion, is our best 4th quarter performer and deserving of late game plays/shots?

Bogut? Its quite apparent that Bogut doesn't get nearly enough touches down the stretch when the defenses really pack the paint and Bogut's poor FT shooting doesn't really give us an advantage in late game situations.

Redd (When healthy)? Although a master shooter, he has a well-established tendency of disappearing in the 4th quarter and usually doesn't really hit big downs down the stretch. But as they say, shooters gotta shoot.

RJ? The guy can barely hit his shots in the first 3 quarters, let alone make big plays in the 4th. Midrange game is suspect, finishing at the rim is poor and doesn't have a single go to move that could be considered a "money" shot in late game situations.

Ridnour? Although has hit a couple of big shots for us this year, his shooting is poor and he can't relly finish in traffic.

Sessions? Our best slashing guard IMO. Can finish at/near the rim and can penetrate well. Still goes through cold spells and makes some crucial mistakes on the floor under pressure that could hurt us on the other end.

CV? Has probably been our best 4th quarter performer (when he is not in Skiles doghouse which apparently can only fit one person at a time and that person has been largely been Villanueva). Makes big plays in the 4th and not afraid to let it fly. But do you trust him enough to make the right decision and get us the points we need?

If we need a shot created, I would give it to CV and make him drive

If we have a mismatch in Boguts favor I'd give it to him since he shoots over 60% in the 4th IIRC

Pick and roll with Sessions and CV and you get the best of both worlds.

Ridnour is one of the worst shooting guards in the league. The idea that he sucks through the 4th then suddenly finds shooting skill in the closing seconds seems a lot less likely to me than him just getting lucky a couple of times here.

Toss a coin. None could be considered above average.

Huh?

According to 82games he ranks 17th in the leauge among qualified players* for 2 point FG's (just behind Chirs Paul and level with Korver a renowned shooter), he's in the bottom 25 in 3 point FG's among the qualified group but that puts him above guys like Deron, Iggy, Crawford, Butler and Wade. 3 point criticism I get cause he's not great, but on 2 point jumpers he really can't be knocked, overall I don't think that makes him anything like 'one of the worst shooting guards in the league'.

Either 82 games is wrong or you are being incredibly harsh.

*To qualify a player needs to have shot 50 3's for the 3 point category or 100 2 point jumpers for the 2 point category.

Didn't vote because None of the Above wasn't an option.

Ridnour started the season establishing himself as one of the worst, but has improved to, I'd say, middling.

Trouble is, seems to me, there are shots he gets at the end of games that I expect him to make most of. And there are shots he tries to make happen at the end of games that yield a low percentage.

He can help at the end of games, but I definitely wouldn't call him a go to guy. Going to him isn't high percentage. But now and then he'll surprise with something clutch.

Ridnour is 41st for PG's in true shooting percentage, which matters more than straight FG%:

He is 241st for all players:

He's definitely not a good shooter.

I wasn't suggesting he is a 'good' shooter, I was saying that he's not 'one of the worst shooting guards in the nba'.

I would have though '2 point jumpers %' would have been a pretty decent measure of someone's 2 point jumpshooting ability, but maybe I was being too straightforward?
If someone is 17th in the leauge on shooting 2 point jumpshots, I don't think it's a leap to say they shoot the two point jumper reasonably well.
