Bucks Fans: Don't drink the Kool Aid: CV is Tim Thomas 2.0

Post#1 » by LarryHarris » Fri Feb 13, 2009 9:03 pm

As CV has picked up his game in the last couple months, more and more of us seem to be wanting to resign him, although, it seems that we all know that he is not what this team needs at the 4. CV is a 3 masquerading as a 4 because he isn't athletic enough to guard other small forwards. He can't guard 4's either. Sound familiar? It does to me. I remember the excitement about Tim Thomas and he really did play great when he was in that contract year. It seemed inconceivable that Kohl would let him get away, and he didn't, and the price tag was stiff, $67 million. Now the same thing is happening with CV and we are all getting gun shy about trading the guy or letting him go because he is playing well. Still, if Hammond is a decisive leader, he has to do what is best for this team in the long term, and that is trading CV.

I agree that the CV hype is out of control. It was not only similar with Tim Thomas, but with Michael Redd as well. He plays good for a season, looks like he'll be great some day, so we decide we have to keep this guy no matter what.

The only difference is that unlike Thomas or Redd, CV will NOT get a huuuuuuuuge contract. $67 million or $90 million are not possibilities. So while we still could make a huge mistake getting this guy locked up for 4 or 5 years, it can't be too bad at 6-7 million. Anything over that I say we let him go.

It is similar to the Mo thing as well. It is hard to let some of these guys go thinking we'll get nothing back, but tell me the Bucks wouldn't be better off right now if Mo would have just walked and we wouldn't have had to trade him away.

If they keep CV, in three years, once he is playing lazy (like he did last year) and we all want to get rid of him, we'll think back to this moment and wish we'd have had the fortitude to let him go.

As long as he outproduces his counterpart he will be valuable. He is not going to get that much money from the Bucks to break the bank either.

I see very few similarities in their games. CV has more talent than TT did. TT really never even played that well in the regular season, definitely nothing like the 25 game stretch we've seen from CV. TT got his contract because he exploded in the playoffs.

CV won't get a deal as big as TT's either. Not enough suitors.

The one thing is that I dont think that CV will get nearly the amount of money that Tim Thomas got. I have beem impressed with CV but have constantly said that if we were to pay him much more than the MLE it would be a huge mistake. If its a reasonable deal where we can risk him becoming a Tim Thomas type than I am all for it.

I would actually agree with you though if Skiles wasn't the coach. He knows how to handle CV.

A young Tim Thomas would be a perfect fit next to Bogut.

TT couldnt rebound to save his life either. CV 3 year $24 million. Back load it $6M then $8M then $10M. Maybe a 4th year can be a team option.

I see what you are saying, however, there are a number of reasons I'd take a 'wait and see' approach and am not totally sold on what you say...

1. Skiles is in his first year. This is big. The Bucks all played great for Karl for the first couple years, then it went down hill. There is certainly an uptick you get form a new coach, which is one of the reasons that the NBA coaching carousel runs so fast. I like Skiles as much as the next guy, but I need to see players remain committed to him for more than half a season.

2. The guy is in a contract year. It behooves him to play as well as he can, for Skiles, but also for himself. How will he feel when he has the financial stability for the next 4 or 5 seasons? Yet to be seen.

TT had the nice 5 game playoff series against Indy, averaging 15.4. The team was on the rise after a decade of being horrible. Karl was the coach. When Chicago offered TT big money we panicked and gave him the deal.

I'm wary of CV too but he's better than TT and will get less money.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Or rebound or pass.

TT is a horrible comparison on every level.

I had a nice four-paragraph post explaining why I think CV is not Tim Thomas 2.0 (which one minute of research will prove) but I deleted it. I believe that if that's your belief about CV, you'll always be skeptical of him, so what's the point of me trying to change your mind?

So, please, I'll take a tall glass of Kool-Aid. I've been drinking it from the start, even while most of you were drinking that Yi juice.

CV is Antawn Jamison 2.0. I'll take that next to Bogut and LRMAM going forward if the price is right.

The possibilty that CV could end up being TT 2.0 has nothing to do with their games on the court, you guys are totally missing the big point.

CV could be TT 2.0 because both guys are lazy heartless & inconsistient players with horrible work ethics who ''played for the money'' in their contract years.

Doesnt have **** to do with their games on the court.

With that said im cool with re-signing CV for a resonable price.
