Why CV and Sessions will be Bucks next year

Post#1 » by coolhandluke121 » Fri Feb 20, 2009 3:08 am

Herb Kohl is desperate to win. He's almost so desperate that he doesn't have his wits about him in terms of being willing to let go and rebuild. Redd's injury and the insurance payments will convince him that it's only fair to allow Hammond to go over the lux tax by half the amount that he saves on Redd. And I'm willing to bet that Kohl will convince Redd to payback his loyalty to him by nursing that injury all season next year. In fact I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that's been the strategy of Kohl, Hammond, and Skiles since Redd got hurt. With 80% covered by insurance, that's $13.6m of savings - Kohl will let Hammond go over the lux tax by as much as $6.8m because he will still only be spending about what he expected to spend anyway.

Now you have to consider which teams could offer CV more than the MLE:
Atlanta
Detroit
Memphis
Minnesota
OKC
Portland
Toronto

However, Atlanta will extend the QO to Williams and will prioritize a pg (probably keeping Bibby).
Detroit will save their space for 2010, unless maybe they get Boozer (who IMO won't opt out after all).
Minny's cap space is strictly hypothetical - they will have a high draft pick and team options to pick up.
Memphis, Toronto, and OKC are serious threats IMO - but there are plenty of other free agents who could be at least as coveted as CV.

Even the MLE is questionable for both CV and Sessions. Money will be tight, and all the following free agents will be gobbling up the MLE's of a bunch of teams:
Iverson
Wallace
Gordon
Marion
Lee
Krypto-Nate
Andre Miller
Felton
Bibby
Marvin Williams
Turkoglu
Boozer (but he would be a fool to opt out)
Millsap
Artest
Kidd
Warrick
Odom
Ariza
Grant Hill

Some of those will sign cheap, others will accept the QO, and still others will remain with their current teams. But by the time you factor in the fact that many teams won't use their MLE in anticipation of 2010 (and because of the economy) you can see why there aren't enough MLE's to go around for all those talented veterans. CV will be SOL unless Memphis, Toronto, or OKC wants him more than any other free agent on that list - Sessions could be SOL because of the glut of established pg's on that list.

There just aren't a lot of teams out there that might make big offers for CV or Sessions, and Kohl is too much of a sucker for his own free agents to let them walk for nothing. Factor in a decent run to end this season, even without Bogut, and Kohl will be convinced to keep this team together.
Wut we've got here is... faaailure... to communakate.

Come on coolhandluke, GAD has already said that Kohl won't pay the luxury tax unless we make the playoffs and win a series. The chances of that happening are about .0000000001%.

Do NBA teams still do sign and trades? Perhaps CV would be a strong candidate for a sign and trade.

I'm sure a US Senator wants to be party to insurance fraud so that he can go over the luxury tax to field a mediocre (at best) NBA roster.

I doubt it. Why would a team trade us anything if they can sign him outright? And how are we going to be able to take on any salary?

And why would we add equal salary if we couldn't afford to sign CV?

You lost me when you assumed that Hammond and Kohl actually were thinking long term.

Luke made a good point, teams do that if they need to dump salary as well, but unless RJ and/or Ridnour go in the offseason, the Bucks won't be in that position.

Titan, it doesn't matter what trades we make, we're taking salary for salary now. That was the point of the trade deadline. We can only clear some space by teams trading with us that are under the cap. That is why so many are upset right now, there are VERY FEW ways to add to the roster next year.

Well, in theory it would be for someone like Stackouse or Bowen who have (partially) unguaranteed contracts and the signing team would throw in a pick. As for why, either because they don't have cap space or to ensure the Bucks don't match (like Atlanta did to get Joe Johnson).
