DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom and the Red Wings have agreed to terms on a new two-year contract that will keep the defenseman in Detroit through the 2009-10 season.

"Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years," Detroit general manager Ken Holland said in a statement Wednesday. "He's a great captain and role model who does everything right, both on and off the ice."

Winner of five Norris Trophies, the 37-year-old Swede is the highest scoring defenseman in Red Wings history with 900 points in 15 seasons in Detroit.

Great to see Nik back in Red but what where the figures of the deal? I wouldn't say Nik is my favourite Wing that honor will always go to Steve Yzerman!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice! Nik is a fixture in Detroit, couldn't imagine him playing anywhere else.

I doubt he would have played anywhere else in the NHL. If he and the Wings couldn't work out a deal, I think he would have gone home to play in Europe.

Return to Detroit Red Wings
