POR 1st for MIN + MIA 2nd?
I assume everyone would be on board with this, right, or is there something I'm missing from our end? I'm guessing POR ends up with a pick at about 20.
So why does POR do this? Roster concerns.
Right now, the Blazers have 15 players on their roster, assuming they don't cut Taurean Green or Oden's friend, Josh McRoberts. They plan to bring Rudy Fernandez over from europe, and maybe Joel Freeland. On top of that, their 1st would be an additional guaranteed contract on a contending team already bursting with young players.
The best parts about MIN's 2nds are that they are likely the BEST, stashable players in the draft. Its looking more and more like these will be the first two picks in the second round (31 and 32), and second rounders can be stashed in Europe, so they don't cost either roster space or cap room (and POR is already well over the lux). These two picks are POR's best chance for finding more talent in the future, that they can afford to keep. And with three other second rounders, you think they're going to find someone good.

Yes, I understand the logic, but common sense says they wouldn't do this up front, only on draft night in the unlikely event that they find two stash-able Euros they like with those picks. I think they'd rather use their pick to improve their current roster rather than acquire more picks, albeit ones they can stash away. Portland has plenty of bodies already.

If the season ended now, they would have a pick in the mid-twenties. To me, I'd rather have the 2 early second rounders unless someone the Wolves really wanted slipped that far.
Good point. I checked, and today POR is 24-15, which would be the #23 pick. While that puts them as the sixth seed in the West, there are only two teams in the East with better records. Denver is only a half game behind, GSW is 1 game, and Utah is 2 back, so I suppose there's a chance this would fall to the last lottery spot, and unless the pingpong balls fell just right, it could be the 14th pick. Waiting would probably get them to squelch the deal.
At #23, I would question whether it would be worth both picks. But wouldn't it be fun to spend the rest of the season rooting against Portland, getting a jumpstart on our impending rivalry?

I can't get a feel for that team. According to the most regular Blazer posters, every guy on the team is a star, their owner has no concern for money at all, and they don't want to lose anyone. Minutes are hard to figure as well.

well, when you consider that half the team is made up of young, quality first round picks over the last 4 or so year (many lottery picks at that), you can understand them. and when your owner is the 11th richest man in america, and has a pension for spending, i wouldnt have monetary issues as a concern either (as long as they can win). they truly are in a great situation.

A. Paul Allen is one of the world's richest men
B. The most he could get by NBA rule for the pick in cash is $3 mil. Two more scratch tickets in the second round that don't affect his roster or his salary cap is probably worth that.
However, I think you have a point, that he could see him trading a player and the pick for a better player.

Not unless the Clippers agree to it. We didn't trade a 1st round pick to the Clippers, we traded our 1st round pick to the Clippers.

Portland will definately need to shrink it's roster, but that can be done pretty easliy IMO. We have several players that are redundant in Jack, Webster, Frye and two players that could be cut with no ill effect in McBob and Green. James Jones can opt out after this year, and if his asking price is too high that would do it as well. Miles could retire, LaFrents could simply be bought out(last year of his deal is next year)
Also, Portland is no where near the luxury tax next season. We also own two extremely high second round picks from the Knicks and the Griz.
I think what will happen is Portland will either trade 2 for 1 at the deadline, or more than likely trade a player or two on draft night along with our pick to move up in the draft to get a certain player.
There is also a chance that Rudy stays over seas for more money
