Dieng/Shabazz extensions due Oct 31 - what to do?

Post#1 » by Devilzsidewalk » Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:19 pm

I'd probably look to try and extend Gorgui now. 4 yrs 65 mil would be my offer. Shabazz I'd look into it, but most likely QO and decide whether to match an offer when the time comes.

Yeah, unless Bazz is going to take a huge discount, you make him play it out. I just think that first wing off the bench should be a better shooter/defender than he is.

4/65 for Dieng? He might eventually get that but that seems steep for an initial offer. If he's not going to take a slight discount, you have to wait till the summer, right? Then again, with the cap rising next summer, 4/65 might be a bargain by then.

Well, if you don't think Gorgui should be our starting PF then you can probably make a case for playing it out. Since he's an RFA you're going to have a week to shop around and that's a week to figure out if that money can be better spent.

I don't think G will cost that much. I think we could get him for as cheap as 4/50.

Gorgui will be 27 next year so I wouldn't blame him for trying to get as much money as possible in the open market. He's a good 3rd big but he's replaceable if his price is too high

This would be an amazing price, but a highly highly doubt it. That seems like a price if after free agency next summer and nobody makes him an offer he might accept. Right now, not a chance he takes that extension.

If that will be the price, then it'd be a no brainer. I suspect though hes going to be more then that though. Though I could be wrong

You guys are crazy if you don't think Dieng is going to get a top dollar offer sheet next summer. He's an older player so his second contract will likely be the biggest one. The Wolves will be forced to pay.

It will depend a lot on how he plays, he's not going to get paid on potential like others coming off their rookie contract might.

He's proven when given the opportunity he can be a double double guy. Teams will recognize if he's playing behind Towns and not getting the minutes. He'll get paid. Some team will think he's an ideal fit and won't have anyone blocking his playing time

Yeah we'll need to wait and see.

If he plays well, then honestly he may very well be worth it. But how much could we throw at him and still be able to afford our core players in the future?

He won't get a top dollar offer sheet next summer if we extend him before the season.

He's a starter right now. How many other places do you think he could go and step in as the immediate starter that would be willing to sign him to a huge offer sheet?

Part of it is that he has no idea if he'll get injured this year and he's only had one prime starter-type year, so there is always the risk of regression. As such, if he's offered $12-14m a year over 4 years prior to the year, he might want to lock that in because he's never had a big pay day yet.

Sign them both now on the cheap because both will have good seasons.
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."

4 years / 52 or 56 M
13-14 Million per season for Dieng.

Try to trade him first.

For what exactly? Are we trading him to save money, or are we looking for a different type of player?
We're not exactly heavy on quality bigs.

For a different type of player.

I think Dieng has some value for teams with a need for a center...
But for us with Towns already...
He's going to be expensive for a backup center.

I think Dieng is trying to mold himself into a perimeter oriented big. My guess he kind of gave up on trying to be a real center. And good for him as he doesn't have natural strength for it.

Id try to sign Bazzy on a real friendly deal in exchange for some security.

Id let Dieng explore and then decide whether to match or not. Dieng could potentially get a big deal because he does have some skills that can be of use to some teams. However, I dont know how much his age is going to be a problem.
