KAT's big night - how it compares

Post#1 » by TheBallsDeeper » Tue Jan 23, 2024 5:05 am

I posted this on the Sixers board, but thought it might be worth posting it here also.

I checked some stats on individual scoring records to see where Joel's 70-point game ranks. It's hard to compare different eras, especially in the past Wilt would play 48 minutes.

I divided the points scored by how many minutes the player played in the game to get points per minute, then multiplied by 48.

Of all the 60+ games played in history below are the results. I added KAT's 60 point game tonight manually as it wasn't yet listed in the data. Embiid 6th all-time in points per minute (60+ points) and KAT 10th - in the same night!!!

The biggest surprise is how insane Klay's 60 point game was, and how Kobe's 81 isn't as special as the Lakers' PR make-out. Also just amazing how many times Wilt appears on this list.

The data can be twisted a million different ways, I just thought this way was pretty interesting.

Thanks for the post, it was a crazy night and some insane shooting, especially in that first half. The way the game went down was a major sour note though so its hard to look at it with any positivity right now but this information is still great.

1 Joel Embiid (76ers) 70 pts W 133-123 vs. Spurs
2 Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) 64 pts W 140-126 vs. Pacers
3 Karl-Anthony Towns (Timberwolves) 62 pts L 125-128 vs. Hornets
4 Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) 54 pts L 124-126 @ Pacers
5 Devin Booker (Suns) 52 pts W 123-109 @ Pelicans
6 Joel Embiid (76ers) 51 pts W 127-113 vs. Timberwolves
7 Zach LaVine (Bulls) 51 pts L 102-118 @ Pistons

There have been 7 games this season where a player scored over 50 points, and that team has lost 3 of 7.

The difference is Embiid went to the line 23 times making 21 and Karl went to the line 14 times and made 10. Embiid made 24-41 and 1-2 from deep. Karl made 21-35 and 10-15 from deep. Ask me who got the higher number I say Embiid, ask me who had the more impressive night, I say Karl. But the big difference, Embiid led to a 10 point win, Karl to a 3 point loss. Both games were played against really bad teams, both games should have been easy wins, but the 76ers got it done and we came undone.

Unfortunately I was out and missed both games.

I'm a Sixers fan but watch most teams. Been watching a lot of the Wolves because I love Gobert's defence, and Kermit is one of my favorite players - he's MJ Lite. Seems the wolves are working out how to play together this year.
