Staal is back!

Post#1 » by TNBT » Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:06 pm

I just read that Marc Staal and the Rangers have agreed to terms on a new deal. I haven't been able to find any info on the length or price of the deal, but I am glad to have him back in New York. Overall, I think the Rangers have made some big steps forward this off-season.

Big step would be dumping Redden in minors.

Yeah, getting rid of Redden would be a great move and would open up some cap space, but I don't see any real way of moving him without taking on an equally bad contract in return. I'm not sure how sending him to the minors would affect the Rangers salary obligations though. Can you shed some light on this?

Yeah.

Trading Wade Redden is next to impossible unless the Rangers sweeten the pot big time, IMO.

There are 2 reasonable ways to get rid of Redden

a/ Demote him to the AHL. First he would have to clear waivers which he will. No1's gonna claim him with that contract. Once he's assigned to the AHL, the Rangers continue to pay his salary, but his cap hit is off the books.

Depends if the owner is ready to bite the bullet and pay him $6.5m a year for nothing.

b/ Buy him out. If this would be the case, the Rangers would be allowed to do so the next year at soonest because "Buyouts take place between June 15 and 30 or 48 hours after salary arbitration hearings, which are held from July 20 to August 4." However, if they take this route, a percentage of his salary would still count against the cap. See below.

Buy out numbers

2011-2012: $1,833,333
2012-2013: $3,333,333
2013-2014: $3,333,333
2014-2015: $1,833,333
2015-2016: $1,833,333
2016-2017: $1,833,333

Therefore a/ is the best option for the NYR.
