KB2011 MOCK: 17th Pick Knicks Select Donatas Motiejunas

Post#1 » by moocow007 » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:41 am

And so it has come down to our heroes. With the additions of Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Chauncey Billups the Knicks have a superb trio of players that helped the Knicks get to the playoffs for the first time since the Bush Clinton Administration (or at least it seems that way). Acquiring Carmelo, however, cost the Knicks a boatload of young talent and depth and left the cupboards pretty barren with only 5 other guys (Landry Fields, Toney Douglas, Ronny Turiaf, Bill Walker and Renaldo Balkman) under contract for the 2011-2012 season. The forward positions are fine and with Billups and Douglas PG seems to be ok enough so that it need not be the most immediate area of focus. C and SG are their more pressing positional needs with defense and shooting a premium. Plenty of guys to choose from but none that necessarily fill a need to a tee. So have at it.

PS: I made some changes, took out Tobias Harris and added Jeremy Tyler who appear to be shooting up several mocks (including NBA.COM's mock). Tyler is more likely a choice than Harris for NY. And of course added Josh Selby. I'd say that this would most likely be the group of guys the Knicks will be choosing from.

Selected already can be found by here

though i think motie can be a really good nba player in the right situation, i don't know if this would be the best situation for him.

I'm gonna go with brooks.

I want to pick Motie here, cuz I think hes the BPA and you dont find many 7 footers as skilled and athletic as him, but Im just not sure he has the right mentality to make it in NY. Gallo had it. Not sure about Donatas. I could be horribly wrong though. This doesnt have anything to with the houses he built in that workout video either. I just have a bad vibe about the guy, and Im sure actual GMs do too which is why hes dropping...

I think Selby has a boatload of potential, but at what position is the problem. If we really feel he can be a PG then I might have to go with him, but right now its a huge question mark. Selby has the backing of Melo and Chauncey, so thats huge as far as support goes, but ultimately might prove to be a little too much of a risk.

Vucevic fits nicely at center. I like his game. He can rebound and hit shots to spread things out. Hes tough too. I just have a feeling were going guard here.

So I ended up going with Brooks.

I think he is NBA ready to come in and give us a nice scoring punch off the bench. He has yardstick arms and tested out better athletically than he looks, so he also has some defensive potential. Would need to adjust his game a little bit to fit in and eventually start with Melo and Amare (mainly become a consistent shooter, learn to play off the ball, and defend) but I like his growth. Hes a late bloomer.

Motie/Selby/Vucevic are very close behind though. Id be happy with any of them. I like Shumpert with a later pick, but not at 17. Faried is a total last resort.

Im prayin we trade up for Jimmer, Biyombo, or Klay though :D.

(EDIT: Change vote to Motie)

Ah What we have been waiting for. Well if he fell so far I guess I'd take Donotas or Vucevic.

If I knew more about whether or not Motie's buyout situation worked in our favor, I'd say him. No way does D'antoni pass on a big who can shoot. But I don't so for now I'll say Brooks.

I'll go Vucevic here. I think getting a guy with his length overall size at 17 is solid. He's a 20 year old center with skills. We currently have a walking injury at center with Turiaf. The biggest need IMO we have is C so I'll go with Nikola here. I'm not sure about Donatas with his buyout situation. That is a pretty big concern.

Wow I'm suprised Selby isn't getting much love. Here's a couple reasons the Knicks should draft Selby. Let's go back in time and Compare 19 year old Selby to a 19 year old Derrick Rose out of Kentucky

1) He's bigger than Derrick Rose, measured half an inch taller than D. Rose

2) He can jump higher than Derrick Rose, 42 inch max vert vs 40 inch max vert

3) He can shoot the 3-ball better than Derrick Rose, check out Selby's 3-point % before foot injury

4) He plays better defense than Derrick Rose, he might even be a better defender right now

5) He's got a tighter handle than Derrick Rose, see below for his handles

My point is this kid is a physical specimen like Westbrook and D. Rose and he is going to create chaos by just putting his head down and getting to the basket at will.

This. I would go with Donatas here but his buyout is an issue. Vucevic would be perfect to add depth at the pf / c positions.

I say Marshon Brooks. I think the Knicks will sign Foote and continue to develop Jordan so they'll pass on a another project big. Also there are a handful of project bigs and PGs that should fall to the second round, but there is a significant drop off at the SG position after Brooks (I believe Nolan Smith would be the next best SG).

It was between Motie or Vucevic for me. I voted Vucevic. I wouldn't be upset with Brooks though. Shooting guard is a big need.

Still, I think it would be better to go big here and pick up a guard later first/early second with an acquired pick.

Selby.
I like Brooks a lot but I think Selby has the bigger upside and would thrive alongside what we have on the roster, under Chauncey's mentoring. Amare and Melo would keep him in line if he needs to be kept in line. But honestly if we do pick him, I'd expect Toney to be moved for another need or future pick even. I love the kid's athleticism, toughness and shot making ability. I think he's young enough to learn the point guard position at least to an acceptable level. I don't think we'd ever mistake him for Chris Paul but if he can become Monta with a little more vision, I'd say we got a steal. I wouldn't be mad at all if we picked Brooks but if Josh Selby is a Knick come the end of next week, I'll be ecstatic.
I pick Josh Selby.
