Brunson might be the best contract in the NBA that isn’t a rookie deal.

But just like Randle, Brunson can't be your best player they both 1 trick ponys or do they do is score Brunson is just better at not turning it over
We need a good all around player to be the leader Brunson is just a piece for that player we don't have

Just absolute buffoonery by NBA media to not name Brunson to an all star or all nba selection

One of the best free agent signings ever. Man absolutely played his heart out all season and then even stepped up a level in the playoffs. Get him an actual star to play with and we might just do something.

Legit stud piece who doesn’t hurt the team defensively as much as I would have thought.

This is his team.

This is why #30 was pouting up and down the court throughout the entire playoffs.

100%. We hear so much BS in sports about guys playing for the teams they grew up liking and then they don't give their all. This young man always wanted to be a Knick and at the first opportunity to do so he has represented the team perfectly and played like he's fulfilling a dream. I can't speak highly enough about him not just in terms of performance but character. He's the kind of player and person that fixes a culture.

Even if he plays 80% of his debut year performance from now on, this will go down as the best FA signing in Knicks history.

People didn't want to believe us when we told them how well he was playing. Then in the Heat series they saw it. I was trying to tell folks on the GB that Brunson was the sole reason we were any good this year and that he had a CLEAR All NBA impact and nobody wanted to hear it. Now it's like "y'all don't know how lucky you are to have him."

After two decades... finally, some good things happening for our Knicks (Linsanity was nice, too, but fleeting)

As a fan of Linsanity who was pissed when the Knicks didn’t match, I gladly take the Melo 16 game streak to close out the season followed up by what was our best season in ages in 12-13. Melo was absolutely incredible post anything Lin related

I doubt it. We signed John Starks for $120,000 and 3 seasons later he was the second best player on a Finals team. That signing was completely insane value.

We signed Allan Houston for $5 million and 2 seasons later he shot 17% from 3 in the Finals  still probably a more impactful signing than Brunson even if his later contract became an albatross.

If we get to a conference finals or better with Brunson I'll change my mind, until then he's just a great scoring point guard who plays bad defense.

nice it's descending salary. Player option for the last year which is a little lamer.

I’m sure this was just the outcome of negotiation, but trying to understand the Knicks logic here. The descending nature of the contract means it should be easier to trade in the future if it makes sense, but the trade kicker seems to negate the lower annual contract amount in the future.

On the flip side, if the though was more to ensure Brunson’s cap hit is lower in the future so it gives us greater salary cap flexibility for potential free agent signings, the player option on year 4 means either Brunson will be gone or he’ll be starting on a larger contract in year 4.

So, does this all mean we are giving ourselves a 3 year window to push all our chips to the middle and build a contender?

As crazy as that sounds… yes.

A lot of this teams contracts end in three years. Plus I think this team is closer to being a “finished” project than people think. Trading for a star has always seemed to me to be “plan B” only because of how hard it is to pull it off without hitting your team. Trades like Zach to the Bulls or Harden to the Rockets don’t happen often, and this front office seems hesitant to pull a Melo trade 2.0. So considering the extensions all the next wave of identified stars just took I don’t think that is the current plans. Seeing if they have a core for a contender to then build on just makes sense. Once they have that then they can chase Star player FA.

Prophetic, gentlemen. Well done.

Year 1 went as well as Leon could have hoped. Year 2 is leading into Year 3’s planned-for championship run. They hit a home run last off-season. Now let’s see how they follow it up. By this logic they still have a 2 year window to get Jalen a championship running mate or two.

Should be a very interesting summer and trade deadline, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see them run it back one more year.
