Shumpert: Offense needs 'more continuity' (Melo Blame???)

Post#1 » by earthmansurfer » Mon May 20, 2013 9:00 pm

I am not reading into this, really, but when a player says there is no offensive continuity and people stand around and watch, it is pretty clear it is Melo and to a lesser extent JR.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/44728/shumpert-offense-needs-more-continuity

After seeing the beauty in the 3rd quarter comeback where Shumpert lit things up and then JR tied it AND then seeing Melo try to take over in the 4th after what those guys had done, just left a bad taste in my mouth. Shump is right, there is too much standing around, no offensive continuity.

We need a PG that can see the floor well and take charge with Melo. Feed him when he is on, and take it out of his hands when he is off.

Snippet:

"We failed."

That's how Iman Shumpert summed up the Knicks' playoff exit.

"We failed to do what we were supposed to do," he said Monday after his exit interview. "We know we were supposed to go farther, and we didn't."

Shumpert reflected on where the team ran into trouble, saying the offense needs to be adjusted next season.

"We need some more continuity as far as running something that everybody knows we're in it -- just something with more pace," he said. "We have a lot of dead possessions where we don't really have any cohesiveness. We're just sort of out there and it becomes watching whoever has the ball."

This would fall on Woodson not Melo.

Shump is right about the offense, and he isn't the only one to say it.

Most of the team has said it.

Absolutely, especially in the 4th quarter. It boggles my mind that Woodson thinks the best offense is either (i) a Melo post up (I can handle a few of these, obviously) and (ii) a Carmelo P&R with Melo as the ball-handler. Running these two plays exclusively is WAY too much of a burden on Anthony and the rest of the team is stagnant. I was shocked we didn't see the side P&R with Felton and Melo which worked SO well at the end of many games, including the OKC game. We rarely ran it against Indiana even though it puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the defense with Felton usually getting free, causing the defense to collapse and kicking to any of FOUR teammates.

Isn't this pretty much why Woodson got the boot out of Atlanta as well?

Now that we know he can shot, he'll get more shots. However, his handle is still suspect and can only shot with one dribble and not of it. The only players that were able to create were Melo and J.R. and at time Felton.
Now everyone wants to create and shoot,, smh but at least with his new shot we'll have more options.

Let me just add, that for most of the season Prigs as good a shooter as he was, was hesitant which would drive me nuts. At the last minute would look to Melo to bail out the shot clock with 7 seconds or les. That has to change..

It's 100% on the coach.

Shump needs to work on his ballhandling for next season. That alone will contribute to a better offense.

I don't doubt he will address that.

Our offense is pathetic.

Ill repeat

Last in points in the paint
Last in fast break points
Last in assists
22nd in FTA

Unless we're bombing from three like we did in the third quarter game 6 then our offense is a joke. Thats half on personnel (need better PG to penetrate, more slashers, inside scoring, etc) but half on Woody to be more creative.

I agree. This is foolish to assume Shump was pointing at Melo. The coach has to design a play to get the team involved. It's not Melo's fault the ball always comes BACK to him. Also proof Felton doesn't know a damn thing about how to get guys involved.

it is a problem. melo is a great player but no matter how good a player is, it is easy to stop someone when you know EXACTLY what is going to happen. woodson makes his offense as transparent as a rock. feed the ball to melo --> iso --> post post fadeaway jumpshot. it goes in sometimes because melo is so gifted, but its limited and makes melo's job so much tougher.

we need to have cuts, passes around, mix in a few post/iso's in but NOT go to it EVERY SINGLE TIME during crunch time like we did during game 6...

game 6 3rd quarter was one of the best quarters ive witnessed as a knicks fan. teammates trusting each other and the ball moving.

it's the coach on melo. melo is better than a player that isos all the time. it's on him to realize that's not the best way to run an offense. so that's on him. it's woodson's fault for allowing it

You can call ISO's all day but that doesn't deactivate the players brain. Melo has done this his whole career.
Look, I had hope for Melo this year as he has shown flashes of unselfish play. But let's not say it is (completely) the coaches fault. Melo can get the ball back to Shump when he is hot and help get him open shots.

Could've sworn we were a top 5 offense though.

Gross. In that light, it's amazing the team made it as far as they did.

Well, we took a lot of 3s. That's not gonna do it in the playoffs though without much better offensive sets.

Our problem is defense. We cudn't rebound....the shots we took on offense were acceptable especially when we go down to the other end and defend with intensity.

On the other hand....our rebounding wasn't. We were suppose to be the #1 defense in the league like coach Woodson wanted in training camp. We cudn't stop the Pacers. 100+ points isn't acceptable especially playing against us.

Lets see how well Miami defends the Pacers. Curious to see how Hill, Lance n West go off
