Phil Jackson on Carmelo and the Knicks

Post#1 » by Rupert Murdoch » Wed May 22, 2013 1:25 am

Dan Patrick: How about the Knicks? Did they reach out to you? Offer you a job?

Phil Jackson: No.

DP: Disappointed in that?

PJ: No, I'm not. They're pretty locked into the people they've got there and they have a nice rapport, Grunwald and Woodson. That Indiana connection goes back a long ways. They think alike. They have a good idea what they want to have. That's pretty solid.

DP: Would you want to coach Carmelo?

PJ: Carmelo's a terrific player.

DP: But is he your kind of player?

PJ: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what that means. Yes, he can definitely play in the system that I would coach but one of the things that always happened in the course of a ballgame is that Tex Winter would be sitting next to me and he would say "He's playing outside the system. He wants to score every time he touches the ball. That doesn't work in this system. You can't play in that system if you want to score every time you touch the ball." So those were kind of the connective words that would mean maybe it's time to take him out and that's what a coach does. He takes the ballplayer out of the game and says "Sit down for a second and take a look."

I don't know if I buy the triangle or the zen bullsh*t, but I believe Phil has the clout to attract top talent and the balls to run an organization the right way. In other words, there's no way he'd work for Dolan or Dolan would ever consider hiring him.

"The Indiana connection" is code word for Dolan loyalist. I like Woody and Grunwald, but their lack of autonomy and their fidelity to an idiot will always limit the potential of this team.

Phil Jackson should have been a Knick coach and executive years ago. Tom Thibbadeu too. Not sure we'd be champions. Positive that Dolan is a baffoon.

Phil was being nice with that interview.

Let's be real, no one on this teams fits his system, everybody would have to go.

Phil Jackson would win a title here because he wouldn't stand for anyone's BS.

I actually think Melo would be perfect for Phil and the triangle. The zone has a lot of Melo's sweet ISO spots he like. The extended elbow from 18-20 feet out. Kobe and MJ both ISOd there a ton in the triangle. If Melo wants to make it to the next level like MJ and Kobe did as far as being a team player then he needs a coach and a system like a triangle. I think Melo would be a perfect fit in the triangle.

I think Shump would be perfect in the triangle role also. In the Pippen role for the Bulls....

After that we don't have much. Kidd I guess could play the triangle. The PG in that system is meaningless.

PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT COMPARING MELO TO MJ OR KOBE. I am saying that his ISO spot is the same as the opposite elbow of the triangle.

Melo's actually perfect for it if he's willing to buy in.

To me the point isn't Phil. It's that we have an owner who cares more about bullsh*t than he does about doing everything possible to win.

Having a complete disconnect from a former Knick who happens to be the GOAT is a total disgrace. It's not just that Phil would never work in scuh a ridiculous environment. It's that Dolan would never consider hiring anyone with a spine regardless of whether it meant winning a championship.

so, Phil thinks Melo is a black hole. It's not like there was ever a chance of him in NY anyway.

Melo's actually perfect for it if he's willing to buy in.

How is he perfect if he has to buy in, doesn't that indicate he isn't?

The triangle is a hard system to learn, especially for a vet.

Beyond passing, movement without the ball, spacing and structured offense, I dont think he could figure it out

Phil isn't a goat Knick, he's a goat coach who is a former Knick.

It's funny he gets knocked for wanting to score

Kobe said it best he's a finisher if you allow him to be that people wouldn't be so quick to criticize his game

However our bigs are not skilled enough for this to work

Sick of Dolan and his failure as an owner than let him know. Every disgruntled knick fan should tweet him. I did. Feel alot better, even if he doesn't read them. Then again he may listen and put the proper GM and coaches in place, even if he himself is a clueless bufoon. One can only hope.

Indiana Connection = he's talking about Isaiah as well

It sucks to know Dolan will only ever hire guys that Isiah recommends. Even though I like Grunnie and Woodson (for now), what happens when they're on the outs? Who will Dolan bring on?

I think Melo would be good in the triangle, so long as he wanted to. Thing is, when Melo (or Kobe) is feeling it, they want to roll with it.
