Phil should give him a call and tell him how outdated talented big men are and then offer to take the Cousins off his hands for the much more useful JR Smith.

If teams did this with any success, the NBA would probably end up making an off-sides rule to end it.

Isn't this the Houston Rockets defensive scheme?

It was actually the Suns scheme. Have a couple guys go for boards and as soon as the shot goes up send the wings out!

It was our scheme last year, except it was have 1 guy cherry-pick on defense and have the other 4 committed to offense.

we should do this when Amare is on the floor.
at least the other guys would know not to count on him on defense :)

Anyone else remember ESPN showing that kid who scored 100 points in a college game?? I think that team does this.

What I think mpharris36 is saying is that business intelligence and sports intelligence are different things. There may very well be some overlap but ultimately one doesn't necessarily correlate to the other all the time. Just because he went to prestigious institutions and has earned a lot of money does not mean that he is a basketball savvy. Now I would also agree that I'm sure he is using some kind of analytics to come up with this claim but he might also just be eccentric. You can most certainly be highly intelligent and eccentric.

It is stupid. Cherry picking is loosing track of a player because you was engaged on defense.
Now you know they are running back, either play 4 on 4 or send one back when a shot goes up.
Horrible idea.

He also picked nic stauskas.

This has nothing to do with his intelligence. Just because people are business savvy doesn't mean they can run a sports franchise. Too many times it actually hurts the team because these guys try to meddle with things they just aren't good at.

He should just stay far away from basketball and let someone who knows something about basketball make his decisions.

And that's wrong with Nic Stauskas?

And people from Harvard and MIT understand things that you don't, they look at things in ways you don't even see.

Why do you think Houston and Philly hired math geniuses with no sports experience?

Stauskas would be our second best player if he were on the Knicks, why the hate?

They got Math Genuises as head coaches or just GM's trying to money ball their way to success? Holligenger is the perfect example. Would you take him over Thibs? Or just ask his opinion on personnel moves?

Easy way to defend that is play 5-4 offense. The minute the shot goes up, a player runs back on defense. By the time the shot misses and the defensive rebound is made the cherry picker wont be open.

If the offense makes the shot (which will be likely since one guy will be wide open). The player breaks back for defense the minute the shot is up and by the time the team inbounds the ball the cherry picker will be covered.

The only time the cherry picker would work would be off a turnover, which wouldn't happen much because there would only be 4 defensive players on 5 guys.

It would be shooting practice for the opposition.

Bingo, cherry picking does not work unless in turnover situations. By the time the shot goes up and has been rebounded or taken from out of bounds the wing defender will already have neutralized the cherry picker.

Vivek Ranadivé actually has coached basketball. He was a pretty innovative coach, in the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell the story is told of how he took his daughters scrubby girls team from the basement of their division by full court pressing every minute of the game. The strategy overcame the teams lack of speed and skill. Very interesting read. I'd be interested in seeing this strategy implemented.
Madgrinch knows more about basketball than me......
