So let me get this straight...David Lee can JUMP...

Post#1 » by Knicksfan20 » Tue Jan 6, 2009 3:12 am

This is something that has been bothering the **** out of me for the last couple of years...i hate to sound like a broken record...but wtf

David Lee absolutely has above average leaping ability for his size.

He can get up there to dunk the basketball

and he can get up there to get rebounds...

So why the **** <<(The F word in capitals) can't he block a god damned shot?

David Lee could be one of the best players in the league if only he could block a shot or 2 every other game...even wit his poor defense, him being able to use his athleticism and jumping ability to get a few blocks would help this team out tremendously...

blah blah blah, we already know this...so why am i even bringing it up? i have no idea, it just pisses me off a bit.

Why can't Eddy Curry rebound/block shots/stop eating?
Why can't Dwight Howard shoot over 60% from the FT line?
Why does Jeffries have that stupid O-Face look every 5 seconds?
Why can't Rondo shoot over 38% from 3?
Why can't Rudy Gay put up better stats?

The answer is the same for each.

Um...not really...only one that makes sense to what im talking about is the eddy curry one...

Rondo cant shoot over 38% from 3 cuz he cant shoot
Dwight cant hit over 60% cuz he cant shoot

David Lee has long arms, average h eight for a PF ...and is very athletic and can jump...

you dont become a shot blocker by just having leaping ability.

It's all effort and desire.

They can't shoot because they don't try to improve. Bosh improved his FT % from a little above 70% to now 81% and last year 84%. What, is Dwight immune to that? Dwight doesn't even really care, which is pathetic.

Redd came into the NBA as a defender, not a shooter. He improved. What, Rondo can't improve his form or is he happy being the 5th wheel so he feels he doesn't have to?

Defense is the same thing. Effort. Every NBA player can be a good defender. They just have to try. I'd be very happy with Lee if he averaged 0.1 bpg but was a terrific positional defender. He isn't even that.

Because Lee lacks any kind of defensive instincts or timing for shotblocking. The few blocks he does get are by accident. Last night he accidently blocked a shot without even jumping, lol.

his arms aren't that long and he values rebounding over blocks, which stops him from taking himself out of position for rebounds and trying to block shots. its kind of a double edge sword.

Well the primary flaw in your thinking is that David Lee has above average leaping ability ..... Dude is 6'9 with long arms but his leaping ability is just average 32 1/2 inches. To put that in perspective both Sean May and Ronny Turiaf both had 33 inch verts.

because shot blocking is also about timing and knowing when to leave your feet. He clearly doesn't have that timing, so if he was to leave his feet on defense he would get in even more foul trouble than he already does.

and in the other 31 games, he had 9. In total. He's not currently nor will he ever be a shot blocker.

Underground past the pavement...

anyway, Lee concerns himself with getting rebounds 1st. I think he's scared of getting called for fouls, but I would like to see him @ least attempt to block more.

maybe its fear of injury? Players who get many blocks also tend to be kind of injury prone (marcus camby, jermaine oneal, andrei kirilinko, kenyon martin). Maybe he simply doesn't have the balls to go for blocks the same recklessly abondonistic way that great shotblockers do.

I've had many ankle injuries over the years. I'm a decent leaper, and when I play short guys, there is no reason for me not to block shots, but I've had ankle injuries to the point where I'm conditioned to cringe whenever I'm about to leave my feet with a defender really close to me out of fear of landing on somebody's foot and injuring myself.

Blocking a lot of shots means leaving your feet, and very possibly taking mid air contact where you're most vulerable. Incase you haven't noticed, David Lee never leaves his feet when challanging a shot in the paint.

If he becomes a shot-blocker that would be like watching Bill Russell which makes him a franchise player which means he will be asking for a big pay day. Lets not expect too much out of David Lee since we all know he works hard to get a double-double.
