Mitchell's Defensive EPM in Utah: 302nd in 2020, 300th in 2021, 310th in 2022.
Mitchell's Defensive EPM in Cleveland: 174th in 2023, 54th (!!!) in 2024.

Could Trae see a similar uptick? Certainly not to 54th, but could he go from the 400th to like 200th or even 150th?

You could get away with the 150th-200th best defender if he's a top 10 offensive player.

I just don't think so... The biggest observable difference is Mitchell's athleticism... but after that, Donovan, while only 6'3", has a 6'10" wingspan. Trae's wingspan is 6'2" and he weighs 165 lbs... Physics are physics.

The Kings can only offer Monk around $15m per season without paying the luxury tax. Really to fill out their roster, they could only safely offer around $10m.

Detroit looks like they're all in on Tobias Harris.

I don't think he'll get $20m per season from anyone.

It's going to be a fun summer.

Pretty sure we'll sign a free agent (not one of our own) and make a trade.

They have a ton of new data for player evaluations. Their evaluation of Jett and AB will likely most heavily influence who they target.

I'll just reiterate what I think the objectives should be:

1. Improve availability
2. Improve ball control
3. Improve shooting
4. Clear a path for AB and Jett

Out of all the players that would improve this team, Monk is easily the most gettable. However, I would still like Weltman to test the trade market.

you try to get assets like Monk this summer, you need ammunitions for a Mitchell trade

Then you could package Wcj+Monk+ FRPs for Mitchell
Draft Carter
Sign monk
Trade Cole for a forward
Let chuma+fultz go
Offer Harris and goga a 1+1 deal

unleash Jett next seaon

Go Magic

Suggs, AB, Carter
Monk, Jett, Harris
Franz, Jett, Houstan
Paolo, Moe, (Cole trade)
Wcj, JI, goga

The case could be made that of the 15 guys who are under contract right now, that the Magic could move on from 7 of them literally without a second thought.

I think we do go hard at Monk. Wish he shot better. I could see us go after a vet like KCP.

I agree with what you have here. So... as far as options are concerned:

C: IHart, Claxton, Valanciunas, Goga, Drummond (wouldn't start)
PG: Murray, Trae, Sexton, Tyus, DLo
SG: Simons, Klay, Monk, KCP

Am I missing other options?

Quickley is a name I always forget but he is restricted. Not sure it's worth wasting our time with Toronto.

Can't imagine the Knicks or Pacers letting those guys walk after giving up so much to acquire them in the first place.

Feels like both guys are going to get massive contracts to stay put.

Paolo and Franz can’t be lead guard ball handlers….

Suggs doesn’t seem capable of that either. (3/D)

Take advantage of Paolo/Franz size against smaller guards/wings. No way Garland/Mitchell/Strus should be able to guard them in the post.

Problem is they have to initiate the offense and by the time we get going the clock is already ticking.

We need a true lead guard who can get everyone in the spots they need, while also being able to knock down shots.

Suggs/Franz/Paolo are not that. Which is fine. We have to find that person or develop that person in the offseason.

IHart/Mo/Goga
Paolo/JI
Franz/Fontecchio
Suggs/Hield
Trae/Pat Bev(vet min)

I'm not the biggest Trae fan anymore but there is not denying that he is a whole offense on his own

I'm not sure we have the cap space to add IHart, Fontecchio, and Hield but that would be one hell of a summer if you add a trade for a starting guard like Trae (or Murray)

Definitely don't have anywhere close to that much cap space.

If they let Ingles walk, they'll be at a little over 93M committed on a 141M cap, roughly 48M in cap space.

Trae Young is 43M alone. Say the Magic send out Black, Howard and Cole, plus a ton of picks, that's roughly $26M outgoing and $43M incoming for a net loss of $17M in cap space.

Would leave like $31M in cap space. You certainly are not getting Hartenstein, Fontecchio and Hield for $31M. Probably realistically not getting two of them.

The move at that point would be to give Hartenstein the big contract using most of the cap space and then flipping Carter for a shooting guard.
