OT: Places to ball in Orlando

Post#1 » by Tarnag » Sun Jun 17, 2012 1:36 am

Hey all, sorry if this is OT.

My friends and I all live over on the West side of Orlando/Ocoee, and play basketball just about every day, but we're tired of running 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 or games of 21 on otherwise empty courts. Is there anywhere out near us (we're out on Macguire/50 out to Kirkman) that have a bit more of a population?

Everything else I've heard of is way down by UCF, and that's a hell of a drive for us.

cannot really comment on that area of town, but as far as the UCF side of town is concerned: every student housing complex practically runs half court games all evening. UCF outdoor RWC courts are your best bet as a non student to run full court games of various skills. I enjoy playing inside the UCF RWC, but this time of year with indoor soccer intramurals makes it very tough to fine a good stretch of time to play in.

TL;DR: Meet some ucf students, bite the bullet and drive 20 mins to play ball for 3+ hours on good courts.

I've actually been there once with my Dad on a guest pass, do you have to be a member to use it?

Yeah, I ball there every week only because my cousin can bring in a guest with him as part of his membership..

If you can get a cheap enough price I think it's worth it.

i had the same problem when i lived in Orlando. The only places available to play were way too far from where I lived(I was by Universal Studios, had friends playing over at UCF and Apokpa).

I live in Ocoee I play in The Wesmere subdivision. I have usually 6-12 players. PM your number and I'll give you a shout next time we play... Being 29 yrs though we play mainly recreational.

The Rec Center out on Vineland is good if you're looking for legit competition.

In the southwest part of town there's Shadow Bay Park, the courts at Chain of Lakes Middle, and the Windermere courts by the public library/town hall. COL and Windermere have annoying triple-rims though, and Windermere is only one full court. All outdoors.

There are also outdoor courts behind Olympia and Gotha Middle, but I don't know how accessible they are.

Holy Family and the Mormon temple on Apopka have nice indoor gyms, and I know Holy Family used to be open to the public on Thursday nights or something (don't know what it is now). I think you gotta know people for the Mormon temple one.

I actually just moved across the street in Wesmere Village. Do they have lights on the court over there?

And for some reason I can't PM you with my number.

I am going to start playing in (2) indoor gyms on Sundays. 8am at the RDV and 11:30pm at the new rec center in Winter Park. Winter Park has a $10 membership for the whole year and you can use their gym anytime. Anyways, I talked with Scott Anez, voice of the Magic, at an event last night about places to play bball. We didn't talk Magic though, talked about playing basketball as he is a baller also.

They only use the lights in the winter time, right now it's pretty bright outside at 8 still. We are gonna try to play Sunday and if not than, than either Wednesday or Thursday. We used to play around 4 but lately we've been starting around 6. When we play I'll throw a post in this thread for you.
