Who's The Best 2013 PG Prospect?

Post#1 » by Bensational » Fri Apr 12, 2013 11:08 pm

I think it's about time to start opening up some discussion on this front. There are some exciting prospects available this year, all with the ability to blow up in both good and bad ways. So who do you think will have the best NBA career, and ultimately become the best PG, out of this crop - and why?

Re-voting is allowed.

(if you find any better scouting videos, let me know and I'll replace them. there's some major disparity on the depth and quality of coverage of these guys...)

For me, I'm very torn on this, and I don't think I'll ever come to a solid conclusion on the matter. Each player's got their own strengths which is completely different to the others. But, the top 3 prospects in my book at Smart, Burke, McCollum.

Burke is easily the most polished PG prospect. He's Jameer 2.0, but with better passing and a bigger wingspan. I look at Burke and think - if he was the best player on a team, he would most likely struggle. BUT, if he were 2nd best/3rd best, he could be elite. If he had other top quality players keeping the defense at bay, then he'll be free to go to work and do what he does best - create opportunities for himself and others. I think he could really click with guys like Harris and Harkless who move off the ball well. And then, come the 2014 draft, we add the real star of the team, and we're off and running.

Smart is the guy that I think has the most potential to be a real star, but he's also got the most to fulfil. He's behind the ball on his handles and shooting compared to Burke and McCollum, but he's also a freshman, whilst they're a sophmore and senior. Smart gets inside, and gets to the line well. His body is great for that, and he absorbs contact and completes with similarity to Wade. He's certainly got the time to develop his game a lot more. I see him as a Chauncey Billups slow bloomer type. He won't impress for the first couple of years, but then it will click - if it ever does.

McCollum is the guy I think is most likely to have a Lillard style impact. He can come out scoring out of the gate. His biggest problem is whether or not he can play point. Ultimately, if you partner him with a legit star wing, then the offense will run through Wiggins/Parker/Harrison primarily, so McCollum will only have to facilitate as well as Wade does. Could he learn to play point the way Westbrook has? I have my doubts, considering that he's a senior, and PG takes a long time to learn how to play. But can he score at an elite enough level that it's worth considering finding a playmaking wing to compensate for that? That will be the deciding factor.

It seriously depends on what type of PG your team needs. These guys are all way too different. Eye of the beholder type deal.

^^ Like Neon said each PG brings something different to the table.

(going off potential here, and being pretty brief)
Smart - Most impactful 2 way player
Burke - Most balanced offensive PG
McCollum - best scorer

Larkin - Quickest pg prospect?
Kabongo - Poor Man's Rondo?
MCW - Best passer?
Russ Smith - Best defender?
Zo Brown - Most undertalked about pg prospect?

Completely agree. Burke could have Jameer's impact by the end of 2014, but Smart might not have Chauncey's impact until 2016, around the time when we could start competing for deep playoff position.

Thus, I'm voting Smart.

what kind of PG do you think the Magic need?

it's hard to speculate on that since we don't have a franchise player yet, but which PG do you think would best compliment a traditional superstar? ie, high USG%, primary scorer/ballhandler/facilitator like LeBron/Kobe/Carmelo/Harden/Durant? (I list those guys, because the strength of next year's draft seems to be hinged around star wings, rather than star bigs).

my gut says Burke, because it would open up ISO situations for him and allow him to use his shooting off the ball. but is Burke like Jameer in that, if you take the ball out of his hands he makes much less of an impact? Jameer never seemed to mesh well with Turk or VC, because he was only ever at his best when he was a high volume, primary option. can Burke overcome that and play off the ball successfully?

I voted for Burke even though I don't know if I believe hes the best. I'm completely torn between him and Smart. I can't decide who I like better, nor who would fit better since I think both would be good fits.

pretty much. but you've still gotta factor in defence. Jameer's terrible defence cost us a game in the finals while he allowed Fisher to put the nail in the coffin. if i'm drafting a PG for the future, i make sure i get a guy who won't let that happen, or, if he does, he's putting 5 points on the board every time it does happen just to make up for it.

Depends on who else is on your team. What skillset does Miami's ideal PG have? What about LAs?

Orlando's problem, if it could be called that, is that we don't necessarily have a team to fit pieces into. We don't have a centerpiece to build around. While our rooks are looking promising, I'm not sure we have a surefire winner, one guy that we can say, this guy is going to be on our team for the next 8 years and we'll build around him.

If you say Harkless, Harris, Vucevic are our core for the next 8 years, what skillset works with those guys? I'm not sure how our foul shot percentage will progress with these guys, but that is one major concern of mine, our rate of getting to the line. With our squad now, I'd like a guy who can drive the lane, kick out, convert, or pick up a foul. Vuc is good at the pick and roll and the pick and pop, I'd like a PG who can execute those plays too. Size can't be taught, Smart is the guy. He is young, can learn to shoot better and can learn the P&R.

True, but what i remember is Nelson being behind the 3 point line for some reason when they needed a 3. I think most of Nelson's problems are because he just doesn't have that high of a basketball iq. Especially in that play you're talking about. It was just him doing something he shouldn't of been doing like when he takes ill advised hero shots at the end of games. So maybe we should factor in "feel for the game" into the equation also.

That is why it is so hard. A lot of it depends on what players are at the SG/SF. Mostly the SG though.

If Harkless was to start at SG, you would need an extremely ball dominant PG that neither needs or wants ball handling or scoring/playmaking help. A Russell Westbrook type scoring PG would fit well, a guy like MCW would not.

But what if our future SG is a ball dominant, needs the ball in his hands Kobe/Wade type? We could do best with a Marcus Smart type PG....

Or what if he is a McLemore volume spot shooter type? Then you need a great penetrate and find the open guy type PG...like Trey Burke.

Burke got significant off-ball time playing next to Spike Albrecht so I don't see why he couldn't play with another ball dominant player

Ive thought this would be a decent combo for a little while.. Burke's playmaking would work well with an off-ball guy like McLemore.

i agree, however, the question is if it would make him happy and keep him motivated in the long run.

smart is a gimmick pg, those who do big and flashy things well, but their game do not amount to much winnings. burke would be my choice, he is a great team player. the type of guy who goes home upset when he scores 30 at a loss.

Looks like Rob is already doing his Burke homework, the front office called up some high school coach in Ohio:

Bob Krizancic ‏@CoachKrizancic 58m

The Orlando Magic called me Tues. re: Trey Burke. I only coached him 3 days in Kentucky. All we talked about was character & work ethic.
