How do you see Nelson as a trade asset?
I've seen that a lot of guys here think that Nelson doesnt have a good trade value right now. That is not the way I think. He makes 8.6M on the 13-14 season and has a team option clause for the next season, so he is technically a expiring. I think he can draw attention from other teams. A lot of teams need a PG and a vet like Meer would be really useful.
The problem is those teams may not be able to pay him those 8 mill. If the Magic is willing to take a bad contract in return, Nelson is definitely possible of being traded. I can see him being trade similar to the deal we got for Redick, and this deal turned out to be really good for us.

Which player on another team has potential and is getting paid a significant salary over a million or two a year? I think a contender might taken him in an expiring swap to meet a need towards the deadline.

I don't see Nelson a trade asset. Why we trade him? If Nelson is gone, who is going to fill the PG spot? The rockie? By himself?

Re: How do you see Nelson as a trade asset?
he does not have nearly as much value to other teams as he does for the magic. so, not really, no. especially with his new contract.

"Aaron Gordon will cost Henny's job by Dec 2016." Predicted Dec 2014.
"O'Quinn will have a longer and more successful NBA career than Nicholson." Predicted Jun 2012. Verified on Dec 2014.

I dont think he should be traded also, but some people tend to undervalue him, so that is what im trying to discuss. Also, it is possible to get someone else to play PG in the offseason, that wouldnt be that big of a problem.

But none of those new signed players will have the same impact as Jameer. Jameer is a Magician for life and he is the leader. That alone couldn't be replaced. And it would be so different.

Agree 100%. I definitely want him to stay. He is 31 already though, we gotta think of getting someone to replace him in the future.
The point of the topic was just his trade value though, not if he should be traded or not...

It all depends on how the team is going to be structured. if we draft this year and next year top 5 with Big time possible FA coming in the summer of next year or in two years, Jameer could very possibly stay on the team possibly Veteran Minimum or way cheaper than now considering his age. Plus he could come off the bench or even start games 2 or 3 years from now. He could fit the vision of this team.
If looking at him as a asset we have, he could have high demand even three years from now, giving his expiring contract next year and career peak in the next 2 years, he could be a filler of a package or veteran experience, see Derek Fisher, to another team.(But he is not going to cost a lot anyway so no reason in trading him). Back to my point, I don't see Jameer a trading assets, personally I think.

Re: How do you see Nelson as a trade asset?
I do not see Nelson as a trade asset. To me a trade asset is something that will garner attention from other teams by itself i.e them calling us not vice versa and secondly something that will haul a somewhat substantial return to me Nelson doesn't warrant this barring a few teams in the league that will have had injuries during the season and need a fill in for their run.
Nelson to me however is a tradeable piece with a somewhat over priced contract but as alluded to by others in this thread he is much more valuable to the magic then any other team so it is more probable that we keep him.
Finally, I can't remember for sure but is there not a rule under the new cba that maintains that all teams much stay above 80% (i can't remember the exact percentage) of the cap to maintain 'competetive balance' in the league? If this is correct I would think the magic would be more inclined to keep a veteran like Jameer who's on a short term deal and valuable for leadership and scoring instead of trading him for space and a pick from a contender.

Dallas is on the market for improvements to its PG rotation. And Cuban has proven he is willing to over-pay. Miami could also use Nelson. He is not untradeable.

I could see a playoff team wanting him near deadline day if they have a few injuries and want experience and backup

Why trade Nelson? The entire reason for his ridiculous contract last year was that he is the face of our rebuilding franchise.

Because at this point we would rather use the value he does have to acquire any building block possible. Harris emerged once we gave him the minutes and Vuc was great all year....Hark as well. Those guys need to be the face now.
Jameer's value isn't great but it is still decent. He would be fantastic in a 6th man role...been saying that for years. A team like Indiana that has a defensive minded PG that isn't a great scorer and could use more offense in general would have some interest in Jameer. Jameer and DJ Augustine may be similar in size, but Meer is a hell of a lot more talented and battle tested.
Another team could be Memphis. They are a team that could use some offense off of the bench as well.

The point is, this isn't a video game. We need some loyalty or else players won't want to come here. Jameer is the guy who wants to be here and will tell free agents that we take care of our own. If we throw him out with the rest of the riff raff we have a situation like when DA left and was openly ranting against us for thinking we could replace him with Ty Lue.

Statement: "Jameer is a great trade asset".
Translation: "I want the Magic to get rid of him".
Not sure why this is still such an obsession for some folks. I have no problem with keeping Jameer on the team next year at least, and then determine his fate from there.

Nelson = Expiring (Team Option) = Trade Asset.
If the Magic were to draft Smart or Burke, keep him as mentor. Otherwise, trade him for or sign a young PG! Then, resign Udrih as a backup.

You make it sound like that is what Jameer wants...to stay on a bottom feeder in a contract year where he will have little impact. It has nothing to do with throwing him out, it is a mutual thing. Only a contender would really have interest in him...Jameer gets his wish. We trade an expiring contract for an asset in return...we get what we need. I would not expect Jameer to resign here after his contract expires...we are a long way from even being a playoff contender.

This. Big expiring team option for a team looking to clear cap. Not necessarily to afford a max guy, but even for a team looking to avoid the punitive luxury tax in this new CBA version.
Screw the mentor part of it. Jameer hasn't done a damn thing to mentor any young PG that has come to the Magic. Mentoring can come from our own damn Head Coach and the rest of the coaching staff. Veteran mentorship is too overrated and very rare.
