How far away from a playoff team are we?

Post#1 » by Blues » Fri May 31, 2013 3:55 am

I personally think, we're solid.

Obviously, we're not going for a playoff spot next year. But potentially, I think we could serious be an 7th/8th seed. When we are 100 percent healthy, we look alright! We've got rookies who got experienced and are battle tested going into their second year. I think potentially, this team could be better than Milwaukee.

We might be better than the Bucks, but there are other teams. The Cavs would've been solid if healthy and now they have a #1 pick. The Wizards also made a small run for the 8 seed last season and now they have the #3 pick. I say we make the playoffs in 2015.

2 year rebuild, just get experience next year. win/loss should be irrelevant. being slightly better version of a crappy ass bucks team is no consolation, but idk i guess it just matters how our young players develop next year. if we catch lightning in a bottle i wouldn't be adverse towards challenging for the playoffs.

if we got bledsoe, drafted bmac somehow got wiggins and the young guys keep making strides in their game, we could make the playoffs NEXT year. not this year.

bledsoe
bmac
wiggins
harris
vuc

that would be good for an 8 seed probably. if not then the summer of 14 when we can cash in on a max fa is when we'll make the playoffs.

not next year.
MAYBE the year after if things go right
(2nd pick does well, we get wiggins/parker/randle etc, continued growth from youth, and star player in 14')
aol4532 on bill russell
I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

Completely agree with all of this. Next year is about our young guys improving and getting experience, I think that should be the main goal. I could definitely see the team making the playoffs in the season after next, especially if our high draft picks pan out. Really excited to watch our young core grow though and I think next year will be really interesting to watch as our guys continue to get experience and improve.

Depending on progression/regression of Vucevic,Harris, Harkless good health & if drafting McLemore means trading Afflalo (and depending on what comes in return) this team could possibly end up right on the cusp of the playoffs.

This also assumes McLemore is a legit upper level starter.

PG Jameer Nelson
SG Ben McLemore
SF Tobias Harris
PF Glen Davis
C Nikola Vucevic

FG Maurice Harkless
PF Andrew Nicholson

Another top 5 pick again unless Magic bring in an allstar level FA

We might make the playoffs in 2014-2015, but I put 2015-2016 at like 95% chance. Really good players come into the league all the time and don't lead their teams to the playoffs right away.

This team is still missing half of an NBA roster with legitimate players.

Without significant growth or roster moves, this team as-is (including the new first round pick) is still probably in the neighborhood of a 25-win team.

The Magic were 12-13 early on, but finished on an 8-49 run.

They aren't even close to a .500 team, but they are better than the team that went 8-49 (which would be on pace for a 12-win season).

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

I think a little too much has been made of that 12-13 start, but people seem to forget that our three key vets all missed bit chunks of that 8-49 run. Considering that the key young guys will all be a little bit better, it seems unlikely that we would win less than 30 games with healthy vets.

The only way we make a run for a top-3 pick again is if injuries hit hard again or if we trade away at least two of Jameer, AA, and BBD in exchange for either picks or young players who are not at all ready to contribute (guys who are where Harkless was at the start of last year).

How far away from a playoff team are we?

Well, this is the Eastern conference where you can get into the playoffs as a below 500 team.
So,,, we can get there next year.

How far are we from the second round?
I'm thinking we're two coaches and four/five years away from that goal.
I love my Magic and have nothing against the current coach.
I've just been around awhile is all.

Orlando was a marginal playoff team until all the injures took hold. Even then, the number of 4th quarter collapses was staggering. The Magic is nowhere near the bottom five, if healthy. That "if" is so great, that it is really hard to gauge.

If Nelson and Davis are healthy for 70 games, Orlando will win more than 30 games. At that point, Coach Vaughn will be beholden to Wins.

Those of you hoping for Orlando to "develop players" (i.e. Tank), well, hope that GM Hennigan trades both Nelson and Davis, with Harrington. Even Afflalo would "hurt" the loss total.

I was just about to say that drsd!

Don't forget that until the december "10 loss" streak when the team fell through the injury tree hitting every single branch on the way down, we were doing a good job of being in the hunt for a play off spot.

We actually were a pretty competitive team game to game as well, we were certainly not a push over, even without many players, and like drsd was sometimes just that 4th quarter collapse that pushed us out, but rarely blow outs. I actually felt like we had quite a low number of blow outs for a team, especially one that didn't even hit 30 wins.

Next year I do actually expect to be fairly competitive for the playoff picture, we might not make it, but I do see us hunting, unless we come out of the gates really poorly and then go tank mode or get hit with the injury stick again.

Not next season, hopefully the season after that. Of course there's a lot of "managing" to be done before that time. I just hope we really build a good team instead of a perpetual 8th seed like the Bucks.
