Re: Welcome to Orlando #12 PG Elfrid Payton
Super happy with these two!
The Payton trade shocked me a little. Saric seemed like a great down the road asset, then the Magic flipped him with two picks. One pick is a 2nd though. The other, the Philly pick the Magic own is returning to Philly, and it was pretty well protected so not a huge loss (top 11/8/two 2nds).
I loved it though, it shows the faith and high the Magic have in Payton. He is our starting PG (Jameer as Captain/Mentor) and it feels eerily similar to MCW's 11th selection turning out to be huge in the end. And there is so much upside potential so it can all shine even bigger for the 20 yr old a couple seasons or so down the road too.
Here is a good quotable analysis excerpt from ESPN Insider/Ford,
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft/re ... rid-payton
"May 23 Update: The most impressive workout I've seen this draft season came from Payton on Thursday. He has the least exposure of any of the prospects here -- but has as much or more talent as anyone on the floor.
Payton had a big year, averaging 19.2 points, 5.9 assists, 2.3 steals and an incredible 8.9 free throws per game -- good for second in the country. Very few players possess his combination of size, quickness, defensive toughness and ability to get to the rim. I've had more than one NBA scout compare him to a young Gary Payton, and I think the comparison is a really good one.
The biggest knock on Payton has been his shooting. He shot just 26 percent from 3-point range this season on 14-for-54 shooting and just 24 percent from 2-point jumpers. He's been working on his jump shot since arriving in L.A. in early April and it looks much better. He was hitting NBA 3s with ease in the workout and his shooting mechanics look much more consistent. His shot isn't broken, though he'll obviously have to show he can hit these in game settings.
To that end, Payton participated in very competitive 3-on-3 sessions and was not only getting to the rim at will, he was hitting those shots in the context of live action. Payton is a "lights-on" player whose intensity quickens when in actual live settings. He was dominant on both ends in workouts, exploding to the hole, finishing above the rim and playing stifling defense. On multiple occasions he blocked James Young's shot -- the same James Young that measured with a 7-foot wingspan at the combine last week.
After Marcus Smart, I'm not sure there's a better floor leader and defender in the draft than Payton. His quickness and ability to get to the rim are special and may actually make him a better long-term prospect than Smart. And he just turned 20 in February, making him a year younger than most juniors.
While he's currently projected by ESPN.com as a mid-first-round pick, I believe he deserves to get a close look in the lottery from the Lakers, Kings, Hornets and Magic. After seeing both Payton and Tyler Ennis live, I like both, but I think Payton has more long-term potential because of his quickness and defensive abilities. The Kings especially seem like a good fit -- especially if Smart is off the board. Payton provides size, defense, a pure point guard mentality, high character -- all the things they are looking for in a point."

Cry more bro
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

Fournier can shoot, he will play a bunch of minutes to space the floor for dipo/Payton

Ah yeah, I forgot Fournier.
TBH, I do expect improvements in Oladipo's shooting and overall efficiency next season. If he can hover around 43-44% FG I'll be happy. Payton and Gordon will probably have a rough start.

I'll admit that I wasn't expecting Payton to be the PG Henny would pick. Henny has a solid track record so far with these trades. If Payton is expected to be the difference make at the PG position. I can only hope and pray this guy has the skills and the determination to do well in the NBA.

yes that is the trade. Let that sink in. To pick the guy two spots higher, we gave up a future 1st (which, as of now, had a good chance of being ours), and a 2nd round pick (no protections) from 2015.

LMAO, love that GIF
I honestly am not too fearful of the offense. You got guys that can score that basketball. Its about finding cohesion which it looks like what this team has at all of their positions at this point.

Isn't the 2017 pick originally theirs?
Anyhoo... finally we got the tallish PG we all have been dreaming about. Hope he's not a Sassinator/Gaines type player.

Yes we gave it back, which could of been a 2nd rd pick if I'm not mistaken, if he ends up being a starting PG it's well worth it

I like Elfrid Payton but I feel Philly robs us with its 1st rounder back.
IMO it's redemption from Howard-Bynum trades that we paid off.

Kid can do everything....but shoot. I usually think most players can improve their shot, but wow, he needs some serious work. Hope he's willing work.
Payton/Oladipo/Fournier is a high-potential guard rotation. wow.

Re: Welcome to Orlando #12 PG Elfrid Payton
My fav #12 prospect, but the price appears to be steep. I think he is going to be here long term.
"Aaron Gordon will cost Henny's job by Dec 2016." Predicted Dec 2014.
"O'Quinn will have a longer and more successful NBA career than Nicholson." Predicted Jun 2012. Verified on Dec 2014.
