For my very first Orlando Magic game last year, Oladipo was injured and could not play opening home night against the Wizards. I was a little bummed out as I sat on the sidelines watching Channing Frye practice out on the court, I remember being surprised he was out there shooting and thought he would be out as well.
Since I was new to the arena, I just looked around in awe and couldn't believe I was there. We were in Row 7, and had access to the Field Access Lounge on the floor level of the stadium. This is where you could go get snacks, drinks, food, whatever you wanted. As I left out of the area with popcorn in hand, an employee gently took me by the shoulder and said "You should probably wait here, they're about to come out". I was confused, but realized that this is exactly where the players came out of the tunnel. I was floored. I quickly took out my camera and recorded the players coming out, handing off my popcorn to my girlfriend as I stuck my hand out for high fives. I was in total bliss. This is my absolute favorite team, and here I am high fiving not just the players, but the franchise I have loved for years.
After the introductions and opening tip, a time out was called and we made our way back to the Field Access Lounge for more free beer and food. As I came back to the runway where the players came out, I saw Victor Oladipo standing there. I don't get star struck, but I couldn't believe he was right there in a maroon jacket taking pictures with fans. I put my stuff down and walked up and waited for him to come down to me. I said "Victor, I'm sorry you're not out there tonight. I know you would be putting on a show if you were" he nodded, smiled and said something, I couldn't hear anything at that point as I was super excited to get a photo with him. I didn't have a pen for him to autograph anything, I didn't expect to even get the opportunity to be that close to any player when I went on vacation to Orlando. I shook his hand and said thanks, took my popcorn and went back with a buzz. Not from the ridiculous amounts of free beer available, but from meeting my favorite player. One I had hoped to watch with the Magic for a very long time.
I was physically ill when I saw he was traded. Literally sick to my stomach. I'm still sad about him going, we all enjoyed Victor here with his time in Orlando. He was active with the community, players, and everything to do with Orlando. Even though I live in Houston, I could still appreciate the person he was from afar, and for those who live in Orlando and got to experience his personality on a day to day basis, I am envious and jealous of you.
In the end it was a business move, one that I understand. But the heart doesn't comprehend business, it just knows that it's hurt. Cheer up though Magic fans, we got to have a great player and guy on our team. Let's hope the best for him, and have faith in the organization that brought him to us in the first place.
Anyways, if you've made it this far into my story, thanks for your time.
Here is the picture I took with Oladipo. Good luck to you sir. Have much success in OKC!
