If PG is available, you get him, nothing to think there, exactly the vet player that will help our young guys get to that next level and a legit 2nd/3rd option. Besides the obvious, it opens up other possibilities, let's say Booker gets fed up with the Suns, now we have assets that can make such a trade possible.

Paul George Rumors: 76ers, Magic Eye Star; Clippers Don't Want to Give Max Contract

basis is wrong though. We dont have as pressing a need for a wing as much as a legit PG. we are just going to be mentioned with any big name free agent because of our cap space this summer. I cant see Orlando going after 34 yr old Paul George on a max or near max deal, which you know he will be looking for.
I agree that point guard is a bigger need than shooting guard, but when you have the opportunity to add a top 20 NBA player and not give up any assets, I think you still have to do it.
George can handle most of the playmaking duties. He would be an awesome get. If he stays healthy they contend for the ECF's no question. He fits perfectly.

If we are going sunsetting vets, PG is a waaayyy better get than Klay.

The problem is, we took page one of the tanking playbook and lit...it...on...fire to warm Fultz shoulder and Harris knee.
My only hope is that Black and Jett still manage to develop into decent players, but their lack of playing time this season leads me to believe this draft was not as deep as we hoped and they are NOT as good as we need for a 2nd / 3rd option in scoring.
Anthony Black will find his way in the NBA for sure. I think that is a given. I am pretty confident in it. His defense as a rookie in an extremely limited situation will stand on its own and his floor is career journeyman.
We know so little about Jett Howard that I have no idea if he is the next Houstan or the next nobody.

Thank you.
I have started teaching my son how to dribble. Even he doesn't want to play for Orlando....

Simons is worse than/close to the same as Monk IMO.
And one guy would cost assets in a trade while the other guy will only cost money.

Knightro wrote:bigdogdylan5 wrote:You retain all your assets now but what happens when you are well into the tax pushing against the apron in year 3 with Paolo max extension. At that point you will have to give up Suggs or Isaac. I also have Vince Carter and Lewis rapid declines to absolutely worthless sitting in the back of my head. You would have to think about it but its really risky.
Ehh maybe.
The cap and tax apron are *allegedly* going to increase by a flat 10% each year. If that's the case...
2024-2025 aka George Year 1
Cap: $141M
Tax: $171.3M
Apron 1: $178.6M
Apron 2: $189.4M
George: 49.3M
Paolo 12.2M
Suggs: 9.2M
Franz: 7.0M
Total: $77.7M on core four, $93.3M on the rest of the roster to avoid tax
Verdict: Well under the tax
2025-2026 aka George Year 2, Franz Year 1 and Suggs Year 1
Cap: $155.1M
Tax: $188.4M
Apron 1: $196.4M
Apron 2: $208.4M
George: 51.8M
Franz 38.8M (max deal)
Suggs: 25M (4/100 deal)
Paolo 15.3M
Total: $130.9M on core four, $57.5 on the rest of the roster to avoid tax (Cole, Carter, Black, Howard, Houstan, 2024 1st rounder, 2025 1st rounder under contract)
Verdict: *Likely* under the tax with some simple maneuvering
2026-2027 aka George Year 3, Franz Year 2, Suggs Year 2 and Paolo Year 1
Cap: $170.6M
Tax: $207.2M
Apron 1: $216.1M
Apron 2: $229.2M
George: $54.2M
Paolo $42.7M
Franz: $41.9M
Suggs: $27M
Total: $165.8 on core four, $41.4M on the rest of the roster to avoid tax, $63.4M to avoid 2nd apron
Verdict: Tax team, but very likely under the 2nd apron
2027-2028 aka George Year 4, Franz Year 3, Suggs Year 3 and Paolo Year 2
Cap: $187.6M
Tax: $228.0M
Apron 1: $237.7M
Apron 2: $252.1M
George $56.7M
Paolo $46.1M
Franz: $45.3M
Suggs: $29.2M
Total: $177.3 on core four, $50.7M on the rest of the roster to avoid tax, $74.8M to avoid 2nd apron
Verdict: Tax team, but very likely under the 2nd apron
Then George would come off the books and the finances would completely reset.
What it really boils down to is this...
Do you think adding Paul George to this existing roster and internal improvements from Paolo, Franz, Suggs, Black and Howard would make them a contender to win the Eastern Conference in the next two years?
If so, I think you have to pull the trigger the signing. If not, you probably shouldn't because Year 3 and Year 4 have the possibility to be real ugly.
This is assuming PG gets a four year deal, if he'd take a 3 year deal I think it's a no-brainer to sign him since it would only be one potentially painful year before he's gone.
Your trading or letting Isaac walk in this scenario? I don’t think that is wrong I am starting to think that might be what should happen. Will see if he will sign a 3 year max but this isn’t leaking by us. This is his agent trying to extract the most money possible from Clippers. I don’t think he wants to leave LA. I can see your point but that contract in year 3 and 4 could really be toxic waste. The history of players after 35 is not good. I am 50/50 because we might be out of cap space after this summer. I think the most important years for this core are going to be those last two years. They have to be in contention as everyone will be in prime. If he falls off a cliff then we could be in a tough spot those years.
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

I would play out next season with Isaac on the roster for 17.8M and see where he is at physically.
If he’s able to play 70+ games and play 25 minutes a night then I would re-sign him for somewhere in the range he makes now and figure out another way to avoid the second apron like dumping Cole.
But if what he was this year is what he’s going to be moving forward (16 MPG over less than 60 games), I’d ask him to take a significant pay cut from the 17.8M he currently makes.

In what way same or worse?? Maybe 1 aspect of his game, but not total.
If we trade, it’s the difference of salaries, not his total as we would trade something back.
We can stand to give up a bit of defense for a LOT of offense.

6’7” above, can initiate the offense, two way player.
More importantly, he can still contribute

I’d love to get Monk, he has more experience playing competitively than Simons too.

Does adding PG push us into contention?

Wonder what it would take to get Murray from ATL?

Define contention?
Would they be favored to win the NBA title or even the East? Probably not. But *could* they win the East in the next two years?
I think it’s possible.

I have completely talked myself into Paul George at the full max if he’s willing to take a three year deal.

I just feel like if someone of that level becomes available with where we're at, you kind of have to and try to make it work around that. I've been starting to feel the same kind of way if there was a theoretical trade that let us keep the main core and add someone like Trae.

I remember Paul George taking a vacation with Ross and Fournier a few years ago.

I’m not sure about Trae.
