Winter Park's Austin Rivers, son of Doc Rivers, commits to Gators

Austin Rivers – fresh off his freshman season at Winter Park – orally committed to play basketball for the University of Florida Wednesday night. He is the youngest player ever to commit to Billy Donovan, the Gators coach.

Rivers is the son of Doc Rivers, coach of the NBA champion Boston Celtics. He is a 6-foot, 3½-inch combo guard who averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for a 28-2 Wildcats team in 2007-08.

Donovan's previous earliest commitment came from Lake Howell's Nick Calathes, who starred for the Gators as a freshman point guard last season. Calathes pledged to UF on April, 28, 2005 following his sophomore season of high school play.

Rivers was one of two Class of 2011 players in a pool of 20 highly-rated guards who participated in last week's Steve Nash Nike Skills Academy in New Jersey.

This kid has game. I remember watching him really young I think he beat his brother 1 on 1. Also, I think theres a video out there showing him beating Rajon Rondo 1 on 1. He's gonna be good.

Committing after your freshman year of high school just sounds (Please Use More Appropriate Word). Even worse that they're even allowed to commit that early or be recruited that early. IMO you shouldn't be allowed to start recruiting until the second half of their junior years.

Rivers may become the state of Florida's most talented recruit in it's history.

Yeah, at HORSE. And up until last year, who couldn't beat Rondo at HORSE?

I think you are referring to him beating Rondo in HORSE or some other shooting competition...not 1 on 1.

EDIT: Cigamodnalro beat me to it!

I have Guarded Austin Rivers a couple of times in 4 on 4 full court games at the Winter Park Ymca and all he could do against me was use his quickness to get past me. Sometimes He got past me and sometimes he didn't. He couldn't hit a jumpshot so it was easy to play him to drive every time he touched the ball.
