Rashard Lewis has stake in Breeder's Cup

With the NBA preseason behind him and the start of the regular season still several days away, Houston native Rashard Lewis plans to have a few friends, family and teammates over for a barbecue this afternoon.

Nothing unusual there.

What will set the Orlando Magic star’s off-day apart is the entertainment that he and his guests will enjoy.

Sometime after lunch, Lewis and company will turn on the television to watch Beyond Our Reach, the racehorse he co-owns with high-school friend Jake Ballis and another pal from Houston, Reagan Swinbank, compete in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, the day’s fourth race at famed Santa Anita in California.

“The Breeders Cup is the world championships of racing, so just being in the race is a very big accomplishment, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to run and compete,” Lewis said. “Hopefully we can get lucky and win the race, but as long as she runs well and comes out of the race sound, we will be very happy.”

One of the longest shots in the 14-horse field at 15-1 odds, Beyond Our Reach may not win, but she marks another milestone moment for Lewis.
