Re: 2016-2017 College Basketball / '17 NBA Draft Thread Volume 2
Well it's the end of February. Is there anyone who has drastically changed their minds on players since the start of the college season?
I'm more optimistic about Dennis Smith, Miles Bridges and Jonathan Isaac than I was at the start of the season. I'm lower on Fultz, and muuuucch lower on Giles than at the beginning of the season.

Still very hesitant with Ball, Smith, and Fultz trio for defensive reasons, but other different reasons too.
I have pretty much stayed on the Tatum bandwagon throughout because his form was too good not to be at least a 35% 3FG. Also his FT has steadily been high.
A little down on Isaac at the moment. He strikes me as a full time PF. Nothing wrong with that, and he could end up great because he has the talent, but his frame scares me.
I'm jumping on the Mitchell bandwagon because he works as a PG when on our team.
My top 10 board for the Sixers is (very contingent on the players they bring in too):
1. Josh Jackson
2. Jayson Tatum
3. De'Aaron Fox
4. Jonathan Isaac
5. Markelle Fultz
6. Dennis Smith Jr
7. Donovan Mitchell
8. Lauri Markkanen
9. Malik Monk
10. Lonzo Ball
And I only put Ball in at 10 to show that I didn't forget about him. I'd actually put him lower because I don't trust his shot or defense ever at the next level.

I would say yes. This is what I wrote in June:
phiphan wrote:Yeah, Tatum/Fox are my guys in the early going. If Tatum can show some extended range I think he goes #1. Haven't formed an opinion of Fultz for now.
Zero interest in Lonzo Ball. Josh Jackson's shot also needs an overhaul and is a year or so older than his classmates (19).
I'm still high on Tatum, but lower on Fox. I thought Tatum would be a much more efficient scorer though. I'd probably take Fultz #1 at this time, so my opinion has solidified on him. But my concern in June was his lack of explosive athleticism, which is still a big concern for me and something that'll be a big hurdle for him becoming an all-star level player.
Ball has risen a ton for me. I'd take him top 3-4 now whereas in June I would not have taken him top 10 due to his horrendous looking shot (which amazingly has gone in this season). Still concerned about Jackson's shot, but less so since he's shown he can do everything else.

I still have jj and fultz as my top 2. I think ball will be an elite 3 point shooter. I dont like isaac's body type. But his talent is undeniable. Im iffy on tatum. My opinion of dsj hasnt changed. Athletic scorer.

I like Fox quite a bit, and in five years I think he will proably be the better player between he and Fultz, maybe even Smith too. But I couldn't take him at #3. Fox is like Jeff Teague, Dennis Schroeder and to a lesser extent Mike Connelly. Because of his body type and his shooting, he'll be nearly unplayable in the NBA for two years. He has good defensive instincts and effort, but his body isn't strong enough to make enough immediate impact. The GM that takes him will have to be someone who is not worried about his job security.
Smith will make an immediate impact because he'll be able to physically compete and Fultz will make more immediate impact because he'll have the ability to shoot.
I got it:
(4-10 very Fluid)
1. Ball
2. Jackson
3. Smith
4. Isaac
5. Tatum
6. Fultz
7. Fox
8. Monk
9. Robert Williams
10. Miles Bridges

I've become more concerned with the lack of volume scoring from Jonathan Isaac as the season has gone on. I have no doubt that he's going to be a good NBA player, but I want him to be impactful on his rookie deal.
I'm thinking that he should stay in school to gain 10-15 pounds and overtake the scoring load next year as Dwayne Bacon likely turns pro.

Not much has changed for me watching the season play out. Biggest change is probably Tatum and Jackson that's assuming their recent 3 point shooting is sustainable. Still have Fultz has #1 for the Sixers but Jackson is likely best player. DSJ has dropped considerably on my board not really a fan of his at all.

Re: 2016-2017 College Basketball / '17 NBA Draft Thread Volume 2
I don't think Isaac scores as much because Florida St doesn't really feature players more than others (Bacon would be their "#1")
If you look at his %s, he is scoring pretty efficiently though.
A lot of 1 and dones go to an average team where they can standout (Markelle Fultz, Dennis Smith Jr, Ben Simmons)
or
a traditional powerhouse that will give them mass exposure (Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum, Malik Monk, De'Aaron Fox, Lauri Markkanen)
I'm not even sure how many times FSU gets on TV each year
Isaac went to a really, really good team in Florida St, albeit not a traditional powerhouse program. They already had their main scorer in Bacon and Isaac is asked to be more of a supporting role and to play solid defense along with the rest of the giants on that team.
I think Isaac would be a lot more willing to learn and do what the team would ask of him than some of these other guys, who may feel like they are too talented to *gasp* come off the bench or... *shudder* change positions...
Isaac does whatever Florida St needs him to, which is why I think he would be a good fit for whoever he goes to

Did you guys see the other night that Lonzo Ball's dad said that Lonzo is better than Steph right now? If we wind up with Lonzo, his dad will fit in perfectly. We've had our share of idiotic and delusional parents during the Process years.

Yes. I'd say Isaac is even skinnier than Fox, and I'd expect him to be near useless for two years also. But he's 6'10, and a 6'10 forward with his skillset is much more rare than a 6'3 PG with Fox's skillset.
With Ball, he is skinny like Fox, but he seems to have better court Vision, he has shooting range and he's 6'6. He'll be able to get on the floor and make an impact because of that. If Fox was 6'6 and could shoot, he'd be the #1 pick. Fox can't shoot and he's not 6'6 so...

Isaac's body type is eerily similar to Kevin Durant's
Durant has an inch or two on Isaac when it comes to wingspan, but they are almost identical body types.

I'm not sure whether this is a positive or a negative. The guy doesn't seem to care about his numbers at all, he just does what they need to help the team win.
I actually think it's a positive. I think he's a Super Role Player in the NBA, somewhat similar to AK47, who I think was big time underrated and a really valuable player who contributed to winning teams.
Players who can help a team win without dominating the ball and using up possessions are very valuable.

I have gone back and forth on Dennis Smith Jr. like every few days. Other than that I do like Ball and Jackson at the top. My love for Jackson has continued to grow and I probably would take him #1 with Ball a #1a.
Isaac has definitely improved in my rankings as the season has gone on along with Miles Bridges.

Ingram certainly has to have tempered the thought of Issac at least a little bit. I thought Ingram looked a little bit better offensively at Duke than Issac has looked this year. I think Issac has been more active defensively though, but considering how bad Ingrams transition has been thus far one can't help but foresee a similar issue for Issac.
