Official 2024 All-Star Weekend Thread Live from Indy

Post#1 » by GoSixersBro » Sat Feb 17, 2024 12:17 am

In the early-mid 2000’s I was so hype for ASW. It’s gotten progressively more and more terrible but I’d figure vibes are relatively low with our team so might as well watch for old time’s sake.

Excited to see Maxey on Sunday. Just turned on the celebrity game and yeesh. At least they managed to get CJ Stroud and a few more NFL players.

My ASG suggestion would be to remove the skills challenge & add a game of HORSE. I’d love to see Steph & Jokic attempting and hitting crazy circus shots.

I know people have talked about a 1v1 tournament too but I’d love to see a game of 21 with NBA players.

Throw whatever gimmick you can think of at ASW, no one is going to care unless the players care. If the players care, people will watch them do anything.

I'm not sure the players ever went full speed in an all star game. I mean go watch the 80s East vrs West games and you'll see guys not trying all that much. The only difference is that the games definitely used to tighten up in the 4th quarter if they were still close. These days it's just straight BS.

The NBA allstar game is a disgrace and an embarrassment.

The 2001-2003 All-Star games may have not been playoff level defense but players didn’t clear the lane for dunks as blatantly or half jog as much.

At minimum can we just get the individual team jerseys back?

These games now, guys are hoisting half court shots and pulling Globetrotter antics in the middle of play. Like I said, The older East Vrs West games weren't exactly Finals-level competition, but they did become more and more competitive as time went on throughout the game. By the 4th quarter, guys were locked in and trying to push for a win. Of course, there have been some "planned" MVP examples. The year Magic Johnson played in it after he caught HIV, the players wanted him to win it and he did. There was one year where both Stockton and Malone were CO-MVPS and the game itself was played in Salt Lake City. I'm definitely not a fan of the players re=aligning. I prefer the East Vrs West method. The Iverson Vrs Marbury ASG will always be one of the more memorable ones. They were actually going at each other with bad intentions. I remember Kobe going at Lebron with the same kind of ferocity. It was towards the latter stages of Kobe's career and he just went in on Lebron and got the crowd going. You just don't see that anymore.

Rising Stars tourney actually enjoyable. Mac McClung’s G League squad taking down the stacked Team Pau with Wemby, Brandon Miller, Jabari Smith, etc.

The only way to enhance the All-Star Weekend is for the league to invite professional players from around the world, particularly from Europe, to compete in events such as 3-point shooting, dunking, and the game itself. However, the league and players are hesitant to do so as they fear potential upsets that could lead to embarrassment. Consequently, the participants are limited to guests from amateur leagues, celebrities, athletes from other sports, and players from the WNBA.

Are you really acting like the best players around the world don't already play in the NBA?

They're not hesitant due to potential embarrassment. They're not going to do that because the whole point is to showcase the NBA's talent.

I think the only thing that idea would really help is the dunk contest, mostly because the NBA can't get their stars to participate anyway.

For me, since the '80's it has simply been a week off from paying attention to the NBA. The more gimmicks they came up with, the more of a clown show it has become. The arranged Magic "MVP" was the end for me - and I loved Magic.

Proud of jaylen Brown for competing in the dunk competition. I can't believe Zion didn't do it too when he's actually healthy. That's what the Saturday activities is missing... Star power in the top event. This is a trend started by LeBron for wimping out.

As for the game. I think setting target scores for each quarter is the way to go. First to 40. You'll at least get competition for the final 10 points

Zion lol. Not to go off topic, but playing in a small market sure shields busts from the absolute ridicule sports fans love to post on the internet. Can we all take a minute and remember the hype he garnered from his HS mixtapes to Duke? It's wild he doesn't get more flack other than some fat memes.

Compare to that Joel from 2014-2021. During this stretch his durability had him tagged as Greg Oden 2.0 until he finally played a good chunk of games the last two seasons. Obviously now he's back on the sideline, but my point is it's sure funny what playing in Philly does to players from a national perspective.

Props to Sabrina. She came out torching.

But Curry is the GOAT with this. Definitely avoided becoming the biggest meme of 2024.

I say more NBA vs WNBA events in 2025!

Mac McClung is incredible. Not as good as last year but his final dunk over Shaq was wow.

Jaylen Brown. Yikes. Perpetuating the corny stuff that ruined the dunk contest back during the Nate Robinson / Dwight Howard era. Gimmick after gimmick combined with mid dunks. I really thought they were gonna screw McClung over.

The goal of this year's slam dunk contest was simply not to burden other events with its weight.

LOL at Jaylen Brown and the judges getting booed.

Enough with the dunk contest going on last. The 3 point contest is clearly the main event.

I think it’s clearly a winning formula and something that will happen again. Caitlin Clark will 100% be participating in some format like this once she’s in the league. It’s a really smart way to build some stars in the women’s game & make a fun event for everyone.
