Lahm wants to retire from NT.

Not sure why but we better do nothing but develop FBs in the next two years then lol.

Was probably sick of playing right back.

I guess that's the next role for Benny Höwedes or our crown prince Mustafi.

Honestly, this decision makes no sense. He should at least try to complete his trophy room at the next EC.
I agree with you, he definitely wants no part of the RB position which is a shame considering midfield is the least of our concerns.

Threw a lot of his (still active) former coaches under the bus in his book, demands to play DM when we have no RBs, retires from NT at age 30.
If he was 33 or 34 I would understand this decision but not now.

I guess I shouldn't care since he just lead us to our 4th star but seriously he's the most selfish captain we ever had. I can already envision him taking over the Lothar Matthäus role of talking crap to stay in the medial spotlight after his career.

It's a shame. The best German player of the last 10 years and the best right-back of all-time. :(
This is the hugest loss one could imagine. He is our best player and we don't have anybody to replace him. Maybe it's time to play a back-three now.

P.S.: The hate Lahm gets from some people is a disgrace. (Only my personal opinion, but just sayin'.)

He worked hard for it.

And also him basically refusing to play RB for the NT, the argument with Ballack who is captain and now this retirement.

Can't criticize his on pitch performances, though. One of the best RBs ever.

Oh man love Lahm. What a shocking decision. Thought he would also go for the Euro Cup and win every single title out there. At least I can enjoy him at the club level.

Probably Schweinsteiger. But there are a couple of good candidates like e.g. Hummels.

I would give it to Hummels.

Schweinsteiger(if he keeps on playing for the NT) is a leader anyways and doesn't need the captains armband while seems to have the composure and quality to be the next captain.

Lahm's not even the best german FB of all time...

Are you trying to create a case for Brehme here? Interesting one and arguable for sure, but I would take Lahm over him.

I think when all is said and done, Lahm will be the best full back ever, even in front of Cafu.

He is just a complete two way player and I cannot imagine one football player who had close to Lahms consistency. I would even argue that he was a bit under the radar and should have been include in some of the world footballer votes. But defensive players are not so fashionable.

...Breitner? He's handsdown a better FB than Lahm and I'd put Brehme, Vogts and a few others at least on par with Lahm.

as for everyone else on here. it is shocking to me, why he would end his career in the nt. only 30 years of age, no severe injury history and the chance to go for the es title in 2 years. he is absolutely untouchable, when it comes to his performances on the pitch, but his personality leaves things to be desired. didnt like the quotes in the book, the whole ballack thing and him rumored to have vetoed playing fb.

overall great player and i thank him for great performances with the nt and ultimately the recent world cup.

Time for Dortmund to make an imprint on the NT

- CB Hummels: Breakout WC, easily Top 4 German in the Tournament
- Winger Reus: Arguably will be #1 offensive player
- FB Durm: Lahm's replacement
- MF Gundogan: Kinda of question mark given his back injury but 2 years is enough time to re-cooperate.

People expecting ilkay to return are probably just setting themselves off for disappointment, which sucks cause he was like a better sami-schweini-kroos hybrid and easily our best mid before Lahm was moved to the 6, but at this point we should write him off and be pleasantly surprised if he ever gets close to being the player he was.

I hope this pushes Jogi to stop ignoring gladbach players, Kruse would've fit this team so much better than agent poldi, even if he wouldn't have made us as beloved with the locals as poldi since he is a PR god, and Jantschke was an absurd omission, the best german FB this season, a tremendous versatile player, and one who's great defensively and very secure on the ball, basically a guy with most of lahm's strongest traits, and Jogi leaves him off the squad after his best season, which is impressive since his last two were very strong already.

Would like to think kramer's inclusion and hahn's nomination to the provisional squad will have broken down that door with jogi, but I don't have that much faith in jogi.

The German under 19 national team has just won the european championships, beating Portugal 1-0.

There are some promising youngsters in that team with Julian Brandt(Leverkusen), Joshua Kimmich(Leipzig), Marc Stendera(Frankfurt) etc.

They were also winning the tournament despite missing players like Max Meyer(Schalke), Leon Goretzka(Schalke), Serge Gnabry(Arsenal) and Timo Werner(Stuttgart).
