never seen a keeper shoot a penalty before, is that pretty rare?

Kind of... But if a GK shows assertiveness to take a PK, the coach usually never denies them the chance. It shows confidence and 90% of penalty shootouts are about nerves and tiredness.

It is rare to see a GK be in the top 5 PK lineup. I've seen it about 2-3 times. I've seen them take the 6-9 spot a little more often. It's usually when there is confusion on who wants to take one. And the GK is like "fvk it, I'll take it".

I'm actually surprised it's not more common actually. I would think the keeper is one of the most fresh players left on the field, not including subs. So they shouldn't have to worry about taking a tired PK (when a player is tired, they tend to lean back too much on their PK and shoot the ball over the net).

Pretty rare, but you get goalkeepers like Brazilian legend Rogerio Ceni who scored 39 penalties in his career. I believe he's the only goalkeeper to score over 100 goals in his career.

Some might also remember Jose Luis Chilavert, the Paraguayan goalkeeper who also scored a good number of goals in dead ball situations, including a number of penalties.

High drama in both games today. The penalty for Sweden's second was a bit harsh.
It's time for 5 refs.

Spain in the Finals vs either Aus or Eng.

It's been a fun tourney so far, 2nd goal by Spain in the SF was a great response goal and perfect placement from 21-ish yards!
Cheers

Wiegman is incredible and should be coaching in the EPL.

Lionesses prevail! Huzzah!

Overall England was the more seasoned team, more poised and deliberate with their sets and far better defensively, both team positioning reads and adjustments as well as quality individual challenges time and again.

Kerr's goal was incredible. She had two other quality chances but missed both.

Earps had a save-of-the-match stretch to get a hand on a solid Australian effort to try to tie the game but England came through with focus to once again clear the ball.

Hemp was contributing all over the place, a glue effort holding it all together after England waned in energy for a time once Australia tied it. Her go ahead goal woke England up again and shifted momentum.

Australia reached a next level in growing the women's game.

Exciting game and quality victory in a tough home environment for a first ever finals berth for England. On to Sunday!

England have been good, and honestly really tactically sound, calling back to HIF's point about Sarina Wiegman. Holding both the Euros and World Cup would be an incredible boost to the women's game in this country.

However, Spain has some really great players, especially the Barca duo of Putellas and Bonmati, but also Jenni Hermoso who is a straight up goal machine. Should be a good final.

Well done to Spain. They played an excellent first half, sharper passing and much quicker on attack and defence. English were a bit stodgy and slow. Second half England were the better team but Spain "managed" the game well. With 13 mins of time added on (rightfully) England should have benefitted but they panicked throughout that time and in the end tamely succumbed. Excellent to make the final though.
