Bill Simmons <3 Portland

Post#1 » by The Emcee » Fri Apr 16, 2010 8:13 pm

From ESPN:

Bill Simmons wrote:I think Portland had the best home crowd this season.

The perfect blend of creepy intensity, genuine devotion and a massive inferiority complex. I never stumbled across a Blazers game in which their fans weren't totally bringing it. Two great examples from Monday's Oklahoma City game: First, OKC had such a severe free throw advantage, and Portland fans were so furious about it that it seemed like we were headed for the first triple ref homicide. (I tweeted that the whole situation reminded me of Chris Rock's old joke, "I haven't seen white people that mad since they canceled 'M.A.S.H.'") Only Portland fans and Utah fans can make a casual observer feel like the officials are in actual danger. That's a good thing. In the old days, every crowd did that.

Second example: Because news broke of Brandon Roy's soul-crushing knee injury that same night, there was particular meaning to Marcus Camby's get-on-my-back performance (30 points, 13 rebounds) ... which the Blazers' fans recognized by passionately chanting, "Mar-cus Cam-bee!" when he finally left the game. Just a great moment. Only Knicks fans (if they had a good team and were presented with a similar situation) would have seized it with the same gusto. Made me remember the days when NBA crowds knew what the hell they were doing. Gotta love Rip City.

I love it when prominent writers recognize the intensity that Portland has for its team. :P

I dont hate him. :( I dont know him well enough to hate him.

What if hes a really nice & kind person. We just know him
thru his writting. Sure theres times, maybe a lot of times
that we disagree with the things he writes, but is that
enough to actually hate the man?? I dunno, maybe it
is.. .screw it, find the sucker, tie him up & BURN HIM!!

*cough*

Simmons appreciates good fans, and Portland has some die hards. He does this because he is one himself, even if it's for some crappy team with a bunch of actresses(props to QRich) on the east coast that no one should care about and some dumb baseball team that has the most annoying fans possibly ever.

Simmons is also basically just a fan with a microphone, so taking his analysis seriously is pretty much the same as taking my analysis seriously. We have good points sometimes, but we're wayyyyy off base just as often probably... even if I like to think I'm a bit better than him at it, I do have to admit he's the one getting paid to write part comedy part analysis. So in some ways he's definitely smarter than me.

That said, POR fans have been great the last part of the year and I'm glad that somebody is pointing out that this is how fans are supposed to act - not the crap we saw in PHX last night that was just boo every call against the home team(even when it was an OBVIOUS call against them), show up late and leave early.

I don't think PHX - fans or team - took this series seriously going into last night, and just assumed we'd roll over for them and the great duo of Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire. Well it's Monday morning now, and neither their fans or their players brought it last night and now they're in a hole - We'll find out now if Steve Nash was worth those MVPs, or if he's just the biggest farce pretending to be an all time great. We'll also find out if Amare Stoudemire is worth a max contract or is simply an enigmatic offensive force without any defensive chops.
